The ANU team is conducting research to better understand what impact these molecular messages have on retinal health, but also the central nervous system and eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Associate Professor Riccardo Natoli, Head of Clear Vision Research at ANU, says the molecules could potentially be hijacked, recoded and “bottled up” in a pill and taken like a vitamin.

“The beneficial messages being sent to the central nervous system during exercise are packaged up in what are known as lipid particles. We are essentially prescribing the molecular message of exercise to those who physically aren’t able to,” he said.

“We think that as you age, the ability to communicate between the muscles and the retina starts to be lost. Similar to taking supplements, maybe we can provide genetic or molecular supplementation that enables that natural biological process to continue as we age.

“Our goal is to figure out what these molecules are communicating to the body and how they’re communicating.”

New ANU research has examined existing literature into the effects of exercise on the central nervous system and eyes. Specifically, the researchers set out to discover what impact exercise has on the retina — the light-sensing part of the eye — and whether exercise can help maintain good eyesight as we age.

Dr Joshua Chu-Tan, also from the ANU Clear Vision Research Lab, says further research is needed to understand how these molecular signals, which are sent from the rest of the body when we exercise, actually reach our brain and eyes.

He says the team’s preliminary research into the benefits of exercise on the retina has unearthed some “promising” results.

“We know exercise is good for our eyesight, but to what extent is still unknown. Our aim is to understand the benefits of exercise at the molecular level and how it is beneficial for the central nervous system and the retina,” Dr Chu-Tan said.

“We found the benefits of exercise extend far beyond what has traditionally been known, however this has been largely understudied in the retina, despite the retina being an extension of the brain.

“One of the main goals of doing this review was to determine what’s going on inside the body after we exercise that gives us the benefits of exercise, and why physical activity is so good for our brain and eyes.”

The futuristic therapy could one day help patients suffering from neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

“It’s been suggested that prescribing exercise to patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s can help improve and slow down the disease progression,” Dr Chu-Tan said.

“We know that from looking at diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s if you exercise in a particular fashion you can potentially stimulate neuronal activity.

“That hasn’t really been looked at in the retina at the level we’re thinking of. We want to understand the molecular messages that underpin the benefits of exercise.”

The researchers say the supplement would be intended only for patients who have restricted movement that renders them unable to exercise at an intensity needed to reap the rewards. It is not intended for the general public.

“We can’t possibly package all the effects of exercise into a single pill, there are too many benefits that stretch throughout the entire body beyond what we could ‘prescribe’ and that’s not the goal,” Dr Chu-Tan said.

At the end of the busiest week of awards season thus far, the NBR named Licorice Pizza as the best of 2021 among its annual slate of year-end winners, which also included honors for King Richard‘s cast and West Side Story‘s leading newcomer Rachel Zegler.

Among the acting winners were Will Smith, who won Best Actor for his portrayal of the film’s titular father to tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, while Zegler earned her first ever major film award for her leading turn in Steven Spielberg‘s critically lauded big-screen update of the Stephen Sondheim classic.

Supporting trophies went to King Richard standout Aunjanue Ellis as the tennis stars’ mother, as well as Ciarán Hinds’ work in Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical historical drama Belfast.

The NBR’s picks join those of the Gotham Awards (which Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter steamrolled on Monday) and the New York Film Critics Circle, which is set to reveal its 2021 award winners throughout the day on Friday.

Established in 1909 by theater owners fighting the revoking of exhibition licenses by New York City officials, the NBR is now comprised of film enthusiasts, academics, and other movie professionals working inside the industry. In recent years, it has evolved into a vital stepping stone (and visibility booster) on the path to potential Oscar glory for would-be contenders.

The group has boosted late-breaking projects into the race at large, like 2013’s Her, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and Ahmed Rice‘s NBR-winning performance in Sound of Metal just last year — all of which went on to generate Academy Awards heat.

Over the last 20 years, only two of the NBR’s top-film winners have missed out on a Best Picture Oscar nomination: 2014’s A Most Violent Year and 2020’s Da 5 Bloods. Remediation, buying out and expropriation seems to be the motto of The Hague. And that while the necessary farmers would like to contribute to sustainable agriculture, but feel abandoned. “Farmers find themselves victims of incoherent and erratic policies,” writes de Volkskrant in a report about the Rli report. This has resulted in a great distrust of politicians.

Against this background, the Rli argues in favor of policy aimed at farmers who want to continue. They should be given as much freedom as possible to achieve the goals of the policy in their own way. The Rli does not want means regulations for the how. Farmers have the creativity to determine for themselves how best to achieve the goals within their individual business operations.

This is possible, advises the Rli, by introducing a system of certification that alleviates the current administrative burden. In this approach, farmers will have to deal with a newly established body that issues certificates to farmers who meet the target standards (established by the government). The issuance of a certificate could be linked to existing reward systems that reward farmers if they go beyond the applicable standard. Think of premiums for ‘green services’, such as nature management, meadow bird management or flowering field margins. Incidentally, according to the Rli, checks and enforcement must be carried out if a certified farmer does not meet the sustainability standards.

Apart from the three minimum requirements for this future-oriented policy – clarity about rules, freedom of interpretation, certification and control/enforcement – the Rli believes that the government should take the initiative “to move parties in the food chain towards more sustainably produced products.” to stock up on food, with the aim that lenders, purchasing groups of supermarkets, marketing cooperatives and the consumer contribute more to sustainability.” So that the costs and efforts of sustainability are not only the responsibility of the farmer.

In the report, the Rli proposes various options, such as an obligation for supermarkets and food processors to put and process a fixed percentage of sustainable products on the shelves, certification of supermarkets and the catering industry with a certain sustainable range, VAT increase for non-sustainable food. Knowing the modules and entire physical structure cannot endure the long-term effects of the harsh space environment forever, NASA’s Office of the Inspector General has issued a new report outlining the agency’s plans to keep the space station in orbit until 2030, and to replace it with one or more commercial space stations.

“Anticipating its retirement, NASA has committed to replacing the ISS with one or more commercially owned and operated space destinations,” the report says, emphasizing that they hope at least one commercial station could be operational by 2028. This would provide a period of two years of overlap and handover to avoid a “substantial gap” in on-orbit science investigations. Such a gap would result in the delay of deep space human exploration missions, the report says.

Even though the retirement of the ISS is currently scheduled for 2024, NASA and the international partners have indicated that the ISS’s operational life could be extended to 2030.

“The Station was designed with a life expectancy of 15 years with a safety factor of two, meaning it could last 30 years after the 1998 launch of its first segments,” the report says, adding that “NASA is optimistic that the Station’s life can be extended to 2030.”

But structural wear and tear is becoming evident. NASA and Roscosmos are investigating the cause and long-term impacts of cracks and leaks that were recently discovered in the Station’s Service Module Transfer Tunnel, which connects the Service Module to one of eight docking ports on the Station. Causes being explored include structural fatigue, internal damage, external damage, and material defects.

Notably, the report says an updated analysis of the structural longevity of other segments as well should be done because the leaks were caused by cracks that models suggest should not exist. This would suggest the possibility of an earlier-than-projected obsolescence for at least one element of the Station.

The ISS costs about $3 billion a year, roughly a third of NASA’s annual human space flight budget. Commercial companies say they can provide brand new facilities for a better price, making for a better investment for NASA.

NASA says the Artemis program, aimed at returning humans to the Moon and ultimately landing astronauts on Mars, is not feasible without continued human health research and technology demonstrations being conducted on the ISS and its eventual replacement.

Therefore, in looking ahead, NASA announced today they have signed agreements with three U.S. companies to develop designs of space stations and other commercial destinations in space. They agency said they want to “enable a robust, American-led commercial economy in low-Earth orbit.”
