« Virgil was here »

This is how Louis Vuitton elegantly titled Virgil Abloh’s last show in Miami.

Gone to everyone’s surprise at 41 after two years of fighting cancer, the designer is indeed one of those whose work has left a mark. Talented in all fields, his heritage is not limited to fashion. Far from there.

Back on 10 moments when he was able to shake up mentalities and habits.

In the cult genre, she arises there.

At a time when social networks, influencers and hashtags did not exist, and where no one posed outside the parades, Kanye West decides to take his band of friends of the time to Parisian lands – from left to right: Don C, Taz Arnold of Sa-ra Creative Partners, Chris Julian, Fonzworth Bentley and Virgil Abloh.

Even more than the extravagance of the outfits, which made the cliché go viral (it was even parodied in an episode of South Park), it is the energy that emanates from the group.

“We were part of this generation passionate about fashion. We weren’t supposed to be there, but we were there anyway. It was our chance to join the movement. Paradoxically, our enthusiasm was such that the excitement around us exceeded that of the event. “

L’artwork de Watch The Throne en 2011

Already maneuvering on 808s and Heartbreak (2008) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010), with Kanye West and Jay Z’s joint album, Virgil Abloh is entrusted with the heavy task of giving substance to this emerging genre that is the « luxury rap ».

To do this, he went to poach Riccardo Tisci, then creative director of Givenchy. It took him well, the final rendering earned him to win a Grammy nomination for Best Cover.

The launch of Pyrex Vision in 2012

The birth certificate of Virgil Abloh the designer.

With this very first brand, he customized Ralph Lauren flannel shirts with lettering and number 23 by Michael Jordan.

“I wanted to imply an emotion, and it became a metaphor for what was happening within this new generation reinventing fashion – appropriate the clothes of a designer by going beyond what he had in mind ”.

The hypebeasts from the start of the decade have still not recovered.

The merchandise of The Life of Pablo in 2016

Before Kanye West’s seventh album, t-shirts and textiles sold at concert releases were mostly the easy and boring cash catcher. Simple memories, no one would have imagined carrying them in outfit or supply the market resell with.

Virgil Abloh got involved, then the whole world thought it was Pablo (21 pop-up stores have been opened all over the world)… even though yesterday and today the question of who is this famous Pablo still arises.

La collection The Ten in 2017

Or when Nike offers him to revisit ten of his most cult models (Air Jordan 1, Chuck Taylor, Presto, Air Force 1, VaporMax…).

Armed with his cutter, he then restructures each silhouette in a style that belongs only to him (quotes, zip, translucent materials, orange patches…). Recognizable at first glance, the pairs unleash hell in the sneakerheads in no time.

Not saying that we are seeing a collab of this magnitude anytime soon.

Lil Uzi Vert’s XO TOUR Llif3 music video in 2017

Six months after the song’s release, the P’tit Uzi reunited with Virgil Abloh in the tenth arrondissement of Paris to rotate the clip.

Wearing the co-director’s cap (yes he can do everything), Abloh films the capital a thousand places away from postcard clichés: lightning in the sky, purplish atmospheres and blood flowing in the bathtub …

And too bad if Arabic subtitles have nothing to do with the text, it is aesthetics that prevail here.

The collaboration with Ikea in 2017

After that earlier in the year Balenciaga set the tone in unofficially copying and pasting the famous blue bags of the Swedish furniture seller, Off-White takes the plunge by directly producing an Ikea branded capsule.

Composed of 14 pieces (bed, doormat, tool kit, paper bag, etc.), it wanted to be “An alloy of the minimalism of the sign and the artistic subversion of Abloh”.

Although intended “To millennials who are new to life and want to build their own homes”, the said parts were however very quickly found traded at gold prices on the resale market.

His appointment as artistic director at Louis Vuitton in 2018

Beyond the incredible personal trajectory of Virgil Abloh, it’s all streetwear culture that is finally recognized for its true value by a luxury industry that has long been ungrateful to it, digging for years many of its ideas without returning the elevator.

Moreover, for his first show, Abloh makes a point of inviting his relatives to the podium (Kanye, Kid Cudi, Kim Karadashian …) just to show that the lines are really moving.

Good attention, under his reign Louis Vuitton did not transform into Balmain or Philipp Plein either, the collections being made over the seasons more traditional, even if always daring.

The exhibition with Takashi Murakami in 2018

More than ten after their first meeting on Graduation by Kanye West, Virgil Abloh and “The Japanese Andy Warhol” have joined forces for a collaboration of a new kind: an exhibition at the very select Gagosian in London.

Entitled future history, she wanted to be a link between their universes who on paper don’t necessarily share much in common – the childish and colorful trait of Murakami’s works, the industrial inspirations of Abloh.

Ultimately, “This dialogue between their arts” was such a success that the two fellows then repeated the experience with TECHNICOLOR 2 in Paris, then AMERICA TOO in Los Angeles.

The NLP jacket in Au DD in 2019

Event clip if any, Au DD saw the brothers of Tarterêts wearing different pieces signed Virgil Abloh, including a black and white jacket adorned with the Off-White brand’s arrow logo mixed with the heart taken from the pocket square of That the family.

Later, NOS will notably be seen wearing in the city a black tracksuit embroidered with a few touches of blue.. Unfortunately, the latter has never been marketed.

Visibly touched by the disappearance of the creator’s death, the two rappers broke their silence by publishing in story Instagram a text paying homage to him.

Aesthetic medicine, a man’s business too. For a long time, these great forgotten people were forced to silence their aspirations for a “better me” in the name of the totem of virility. A question of not going beyond their assigned role in society. That was before. Today, beauty and well-being are also combined in the masculine. A story of midlife crisis? In his fifties? You are not there! The high priestess of well-being and aesthetics, Ronit Raphael, dedicates a Men’s Club Clinic to them today in her Temple of beauty, L.RAPHAEL. Discovery in Geneva.

The post-covid homo assumes wanting to take care of himself, counter the signs of aging, overcome a complex by treating it, redraw his silhouette, cultivate his sex appeal thanks to science. In a society where we are constantly scrutinized, selfierized, body challenged or zoomed in: the time has come for equality between men and women, since both of them want to be perfectly presentable. In this new situation, have we reflected on the fact that the approach of men to optimize their appearance and their well-being differs from the fair sex? Where do they place the cursor, their priorities and, ultimately, their confidence?

« Few of the establishments have investigated this exponential market. Men do not spontaneously take the initiative to walk through the doors of an aesthetic institute, often they accompany their wives, their relatives. There, they discover a world of possibilities… far from being reserved for women only. We observed it in our address of the Temple of Beauty L. Raphael. So, when they become aware of the different treatments and protocols, it’s a revelation! », Enlightens the Doctor Raphael Gumener, spawn of Swiss cosmetic surgery and partner in the early days of businesswoman Ronit Raphael.

During their lifetime, men are confronted with problems such as hair loss from the age of 35, a phenomenon that can affect them early in their twenties with 25% of affected; other studies in this area establish a frequent skin problem: acne impacts the latter up to 42% among those under 30, a rate that can rise to 20% among those in their thirties and 12% among those over 40 (according to WebMD, one of the leading American organizations in health data). But it is the adolescents who remain the most exposed with 85% of them going through more or less severe and lasting acne episodes.

« Behind these cold figures, there are above all men, sometimes in distress. We live in an appearance-driven world, where the pressure to look the best it can be is greater than ever. And there is still something vital – it is to have a healthy, positive relationship with yourself. Understanding the stories behind the motivations and responding to them with technology, the knowledge gained from more than half a million procedures supervised by L.RAPHAEL around the world, naturally led us to create our Men’s Club Clinic. A space exclusively dedicated to men that I wanted to be both revolutionary through its cutting-edge treatments, but also holistic through its approach incorporating the lifestyle as a whole (medicine, nutrition, anti-aging, aesthetics, sport, etc.). ”, shares the instigator of the project, Ronit Raphael.

Rue du Rhône, in Geneva’s most exclusive address, these gentlemen are entitled to every consideration. Warmly welcomed in a confidential space of 300m2 overlooking the private mansion of the Temple of Beauty, these guests access by a private elevator to the Men’s Club Clinic. In this luxury setting, the cult of discretion and personalization rule every action. Here, we are not talking about “customers”, but “members” or “guests”. Like a traditional gentlemen’s club, initiated or newly co-opted members take the pleasure of thinking of themselves, of stealing time from their overloaded agenda, sheltered from the tumult of the city and the uncompromising gaze of the other. Free to talk about slimming treatments, hair treatments, anti-aging protocols, laser hair removal, relaxing massages and spilling out on their mental load or even on the injunction of the perfect metrosexual body advocated by magazines, these “males” under pressure fall off the mask.

« It is in consultation with our members that we have developed the programs of the Men’s Club Clinic. We have created unique packages corresponding to their demanding and nomadic lifestyle. Their wellness journey begins with a private consultation with Dr Raphael Gumener, the starting point for a personalized plan adapted to their problems and objectives. Equipped with a state-of-the-art technical platform, our brand has based its reputation on patented oxygen-based treatments such as Oxy Peel, Oxy Slim or Oxy Scalp therapies. Today, we are deploying all our expertise for this patient population increasingly educated in aesthetic and holistic medicine. ”, details the founder of the empire L. Raphael.

In her diary, the popess of style and beauty, usually takes care of sublimating the appearance of Hollywood stars during the red carpet. From Julianne Moore to Robert de Niro via Penélope Cruz and Marion Cotillard. Today, Ronit Raphael shares his science and his passion with a hitherto neglected audience. The pandemic has also made them more visible, as evidenced by the latest Men’s Journal survey, which reports a 27% increase in cosmetic injections in these subjects aged 35 to 65.

Mirror, my beautiful mirror, a refrain which resonates more than ever among men!

Gastronomic confessions: The restaurant after, by Alain Bauer (Fayard)

If you are rather located north of the Loire, it is a foreign country that is not very far from the northern half of France. We are obviously talking about Belgium, located about 300 kilometers from Paris… What if you feel like it? offer a little getaway to the land of mussels and friess, chocolates and Manneken-Pis, we have found a dream place to spend a weekend or more if you like.

About twenty kilometers from the capital, Brussels, and in the province of Brabant Wallon, is in Nivelles, a charming tiny-house which will offer you an unforgettable nature break… Welcome to Archibald & Joséphine!

A tiny house in the heart of Nature

The tiny-house is located in the middle of a two-hectare site, which will allow you to completely disconnect. But also, a parenthesis during which you will forget the constraints linked to your hectic life…. On the program: serenity, harmony with Nature, calm and rest!

The tiny-house is obviously all made of wood with large windows that let in natural light. Like most tiny-houses, that of Archibald and Joséphine is meant to be autonomous. For water you can count on a supply from the nearby lake filtered through a pump system. For electricity, it will be necessary to rely on the force of the wind since it is powered by a wind turbine. On the other hand, if you do not know how to pick up your smartphone, you will have to go your way: no Wifi on the site! A perfect way to completely disconnect, we warned you!

A little visit inside is essential!

The charming exterior obviously makes us want to know what she hides in her heart! Small wooden chairs arranged around a brazier promise unforgettable outdoor evenings if the Belgian weather is right! For the background sound, imagine the clicking of the nearby lake and that of native birds or birds of passage which will offer you a very natural concert! Only a few cables from the “noisy” Brussels, it is a real haven of peace that awaits you …

And inside, all the necessary comfort awaits you! You will discover there, a lounge area and a dining area … But also a bathroom and the sleeping area on the mezzanine. The tiny-house is furnished with wood and cushions in warm colors that invite rest and calm. For winter evenings, the owners have installed a comforting pellet stove! A charming and charming weekend that awaits you in Belgium, right?

How much does it cost ?

The owners offer different formulas to suit everyone’s needs. So, if you decide to spend only one night there, it will cost you 195 € for two people. You can also choose to cook your meals yourself or put your feet under the table… For € 30, an organic and healthy breakfast will be served to you… And for an additional € 40, you can taste an al Djote tart, a specialty of Nivelles made from chard, lean farmhouse white cheese and butter, accompanied by ‘a beer… Belgian obviously!

Finally, for 80 € it will be barbecue, fondue or raclette depending on the season … And if you feel like luxury to make the most of your little romantic weekend, you can have a starred menu delivered from Bistro Racine. local for 100 €! Do not forget the small boat trip on the lake to digest it all!

“The art of the bartender is as much about creating great cocktails as it is about bringing people together around a place to have fun” – Rory Shepherd, Creative Director of The Little Red Door

On the plate, locally produced – the managers have selected the best pork butchers, bakers and cheese makers in the area. Even the beer comes from here, it is brewed at the Goutte d’Or. The coffee is roasted by Lomi (in the 18th arrondissement) and the ice cream comes from the Butte. In terms of flavors, we pump the southern region through a deliberately simple but seasonal menu: grilled mushrooms, Saint-Nectaire, country bread; polpette al sugo, polenta al gorgonzola; wild sea bass crudo, spicy virgin sauce; casarecce in nduja, in puttanesca; fillet of sea bream, cream of peppers, chard; pear tart, vanilla custard; chocolate mousse, hazelnuts, orange zest.

“Mediterranean cuisine is simplicity and elegance. It’s a beautifully bohemian attitude ”- Apostolos Valleras, Director of Bonhomie

And for thirst, unique and original cocktails. Significantly, the house bartenders themselves infuse their own aromas (oregano, saffron, verbena berry). To consume at the café, or in your room.

What are the surroundings like?

A small quiet lane of Abbesses, on the Butte Montmartre, in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. A few minutes walk away, the historic cemetery of Montmartre, which hosts many famous deceased, the emblematic Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Place du Tertre, famous for its painters and tourist terraces, the Bust of Dalida with discolored breasts or again the rue des Martyrs, one of the most commercial streets in the 9th arrondissement of the capital.

Something else ?

A hidden garden, where to come to be inspired, to meditate or to rest among the birds. Sheltered and shaded terraces. An open-air cinema – a canvas drawn in the garden – when the weather permits. Musical evenings on Friday. A working jukebox in the lobby.

["content"]=> array(1) { ["encoded"]=> string(7727) "
At Vuitton as for his own brand, Off-White, through objects to album covers, Virgil Abloh, who died Sunday from cancer, had developed an inimitable signature.

Luxury streetwear

Baggy pants, oversized t-shirts, hoodies, sneakers… Streetwear and hip-hop cultures permeate the locker rooms of Virgil Abloh, skateboard and music fan since adolescence and unwavering companion of Kanye West – or “Ye ” these days. Abloh brought them a high-end dimension through the materials (in particular at Vuitton) and the precision of the cut. Result, an extremely studied coolness which abolishes the borders between formal and relaxed, which goes beyond the cliché cliché “monsieur versus bad boy».

Le tayloring

Virgil Abloh helped update the male costume by seizing its codes but torpedoing the staid, penguin side. With him, the two or three piece takes a pop turn, he likes the color block (monochrome silhouettes) immaculate or flashy, dare prints like a cloudy sky or a total checkered look, pimps the case with fancy accessories (big brooch, button-jewelry, ties-jewelry, cap, cowboy hat ) and flamboyant sneakers that send the moccasin back to the antiques department.

Glamorous but hybrid femininity

At Off-White, Abloh dressed both men and women, for a production quite distinct from his work at Vuitton. More minimalist. But, in the intention and the invoice, this ready-to-wear (far from being up to all budgets) is luxurious, especially the women’s collections. Even when sport is the source of inspiration (American football, athletics, motor racing, Abloh has also collaborated with the queen tennis Serena Williams for which he concocted dresses echoing tutu), his locker rooms call for a glamorous femininity. Corded minidresses or long gala dresses rub shoulders with Lycra jumpsuits, quilted bags and down jackets, ultra-sexy leather dresses, wide open on the thigh, can alternate with sharp cyclists, crop-tops… The model Bella Hadid and her beautiful melancholy ice cream excelled at electrifying them.

The art of “collab”

Virgil Abloh, it was “Mister Collab”. We could cite jumbled up its partnerships with Nike, Levi’s, Moncler, Jimmy Choo, Takashi Murakami, Nigo or even Kith (another brand keen on collaborations of all kinds) for clothing. But it would then be very incomplete as the jack-of-all-trades has never ceased to push the limits, evidenced by its association with Mercedes Benz for a pompous SUV with a futuristic aesthetic. Besides its partnerships with Ikea or Evian, what can we say about the prolific relationship with the manufacturer of household appliances Braun which gave birth to watches, impeccably pop alarm clocks and a (magnificent) revisited version of a wall-mounted hi-fi system initially? released in 1965 …

The science of album covers

The mark Virgil Abloh leaves in hip-hop culture might at first glance come down to the creation of the Off-White brand, which owes part of its success to rappers, or to the appearance of his name in a slew of titles or clips he made. But that would be missing out on album visuals designed for iconic MCs (Kanye West and Jay-Z, A $ AP Rocky, Pop Smoke, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert…). Among the most remarkable covers, there is that of Dark Sky Paradise by rapper Big Sean. The Californian artist seems to come back from a sort of frosty hell, with an image constructed in “blur-net”, in the form of a mist on a black and white background. Her face is hidden by a mysterious veil. You can hardly read the word “PARADISE” written in the manner of a child having previously blown on the windows of a school bus.

It is in the 9e district, next to the Treviso theater, hides an astonishing gymnasium where the first basketball match in Europe was played in 1893.

It is by entering through the hall of the Trevise theater, in the 9th, that one reaches the first basketball court built in France. Inaugurated in 1893 at the instigation of the protestant institution YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association), the building also housed a performance hall, a library, classrooms, billiards, one of the first selfs in Paris, a creamery, but also a gymnasium, a bowling alley, fencing tracks and an indoor swimming pool.

We all know the IKEA stores, which have been present throughout France since 1981. The first of the 34 French outlets had opened in Bobigny (93). And since that date, we have also discovered a marketing strategy specific to the brand. Specialist in rather unusual innovations and publicity stunts that we remember. IKEA often offer ephemeral operations, but beyond the marketing blows, the Swedish advertising campaigns often raise social problems!

The giant recently offered in Paris, capsules for the nap which moved at the foot of your office for a half-hour break … Very recently, noise-canceling curtains were appearing, to improve teleworking. This time, it’s to Japan that you have to fly to discover the concept of the furnished studio for less than 1 € per month.

IKEA’s new tiny houses

IKEA already offered for sale tiny houses of its own, but even with an area of only 20 m², impossible to fit in megalopolises like Tokyo. On the brand’s YouTube channel, we can discover three videos that present IKEA Japan’s new project, and it’s a little bomb on the real estate market!

A 10 m² room is negotiated around 1000 € per month in the Japanese capital. IKEA rushes into the real estate market with a furnished room that will cost only 99 yen per month, or 77 euro cents… We can hardly believe it and yet it seems to be the reality!

What is the IKEA studio?

In the popular district of Shinkuju, in the heart of Tokyo, IKEA will therefore offer apartments of 10 m² for less than € 1 per month; they will be fitted out and furnished by the brand. When you know the ingenuity of the Swedish giant’s furniture, you tell yourself that it must be practical and very functional, and that there must surely be room to live in 10 m². IKEA also explains that in such a small room, you have to use the entire height to save space! Obviously !

For the moment, only one apartment will see the light of day, and candidates will have until December 3 to register. They must be over 20 years old and be a member of the IKEA Family program; these are the only two conditions required. The lucky winner will be able to enjoy his mini apartment until January 15, 2023 ! We wouldn’t be surprised if more apartments of this style popped up in Tokyo; IKEA has long sought to establish a lasting foothold in the Japanese market.

Tiny houses, a solution to poor housing?

Tiny houses are increasingly considered to deal with poor housing and excessive rents in our country. A priori, we are not the only ones to face rents of 1000 € for a few square meters! The villages of tiny houses are popping up all over France, as in Lyon, for young people in precarious situations, or in Villeurbanne. for isolated women.

What if tiny houses became a more dignified alternative to social hotels where people in need crowd together, sometimes in unsanitary conditions? Many municipalities, more focused on the social, are now opting for the construction of villages of tiny houses, which also restore confidence to people in difficult situations.
