In quantum communication networks, information is transmitted by single particles of light (photons). At the nodes of such a network buffer elements are needed which can temporarily store, and later re-emit, the quantum information contained in the photons.

Researchers at the University of Basel in the group of Prof. Philipp Treutlein have now developed a quantum memory that is based on an atomic gas inside a glass cell. The atoms do not have to be specially cooled, which makes the memory easy to produce and versatile, even for satellite applications. Moreover, the researchers have realized a single photon source which allowed them to test the quality and storage time of the quantum memory. Their results were recently published in the scientific journal PRX Quantum.

Warm atoms in vapor cells

?The suitability of warm atoms in vapor cells for quantum memories has been investigated for the past twenty years,? says Gianni Buser, who worked on the experiment as a PhD student. ?Usually, however, attenuated laser beams ? and hence classical light ? were used.? In classical light, the number of photons hitting the vapor cell in a certain period follows a statistical distribution; on average it is one photon, but sometimes it can be two, three or none.

To test the quantum memory with ?quantum light? ? that is, always precisely one photon ? Treutlein and his co-workers developed a dedicated single photon source that emits exactly one photon at a time. The instant when that happens is heralded by a second photon, which is always sent out simultaneously with the first one. This allows the quantum memory to be activated at the right moment.

The single photon is then directed into the quantum memory where, with the help of a control laser beam, the photon causes more than a billion rubidium atoms to take on a so-called superposition state of two possible energy levels of the atoms. The photon itself vanishes in the process, but the information contained in it is transformed into the superposition state of the atoms. A brief pulse of the control laser can then read out that information after a certain storage time and transform it back into a photon.

Reducing read-out noise

?Up to now, a critical point has been noise ? additional light that is produced during the read-out and that can compromise the quality of the photon,? explains Roberto Mottola, another PhD student in Treutlein?s lab. Using a few tricks, the physicists were able to reduce that noise sufficiently so that after storage times of several hundred nanoseconds the single photon quality was still high.

?Those storage times are not very long, and we didn?t actually optimize them for this study,? Treutlein says, ?but already now they are more than a hundred times longer than the duration of the stored single photon pulse.? This means that the quantum memory developed by the Basel researchers can already be employed for interesting applications. For instance, it can synchronize randomly produced single photons, which can then be used in various quantum information applications.

Back to the Firebird

The Firebird is an American sports coupe born in 1967 and produced until 2002. General Motors wanted to compete with the Mustang and used the Camaro to design the Firebird. It is the boss of Pontiac, John deLorean, who will set up the project.

The Firebird will receive more and more powerful engines, up to the Trans-Am version, the most powerful and the most requested. She will even become a model in her own right. It is the third generation that will interest us.

KITT, a brand new model

Born in 1982, the third generation no longer has much in common with the two previous ones. Born well after the oil crisis, its design was completely different. Lighter and more aerodynamic, the Firebird is also stiffer.

The bodywork is streamlined, after wind tunnel tests, and the headlights retract into the front face. The engines were controlled by an on-board computer to improve performance and make the car more economical and less polluting. KITT will slip into this skin.

Intelligence comes to the Firebird

Under a light camouflage, we find the features of the Firebird Trans-Am. The front fascia has been modified to incorporate the scanner which is KITT’s eye, the interior transformed into an airplane cockpit with an open steering wheel; at the rear, only the lights have been smoked.

But KITT is blessed with stunning performance; KITT can drive in total autonomy at 480 km/h and even up to 800 km/h, perform jumps thanks to Turbo Boost, and move in silence thanks to “Silent Mode”.

In addition to talking, KITT had a kind of GPS, emergency braking and a computer that allows him to master the art of dialogue, to guess the moods of his driver and even to give him advice.

23 Firebirds for Production

The producers had great difficulty convincing Pontiac to use the Firebird for the series; finally, it is the boss of the time, Bill Hoglund who allows himself to be convinced. Universal has managed to obtain three of them which will pass through the expert hands of a designer, Michael Scheffe.

He will start by installing computers on the dashboard and transform the dashboard into a high-tech showcase. A single Trans-Am required six weeks of work for a budget of $18,000. For additional Firebirds, it will just be a fluke.

A lucky derailment

This same year 1982, a train carrying new Firebird Trans-Am will derail; and turn new Pontiacs into unsaleable scrap metal. Universal will buy about twenty of them which will be used for the stunts; but some scenes are not fitting?

The typical steering wheel suddenly becomes round. The most perilous stunts were entrusted to miniatures created to measure from model Camaros.

And when KITT has to ride alone, one of the examples will have a set of controls located very low to conceal the driver. After the discontinuation of the series, Pontiac put on sale accessory kits to change its car into a KITT replica.

It took roughly halving the 110-degree field of view of the Meta Quest 2, the firm’s consumer headset. In return, it offers roughly 2.5 times the resolution of the Quest, 21832 x 1920 pixels per eye. Mark Zuckerberg claims it offers around 55 pixels per degree of field of view.

The objective is to approach sunglasses, but Meta is still working on the development of an autonomous light source that would power them, a laser to the detriment of the OLEDs used so far. But Mark Zuckerberg does not hide that “(his) jury has still not found an appropriate laser source”. It is indeed necessary to find effective solutions, which consume little energy and cost, and which adapt to the desired finesse of a virtual reality headset.

During this event, Michael Abrash, chief scientist of Meta’s virtual reality laboratory, also reported on MirrorLake, a prototype that is only at the concept stage. With its ski goggle appearances, it would incorporate the fine optics of the Holocake 2, the HDR capabilities of Starburst, and the resolution of Butterscotch. “This shows what a complete next-generation display system could look like,” said Michael Abrash. Mirror Lake would also include an outward-facing screen that projects an image of the user’s eyes, reducing the sense of physical separation for those outside the headset.

Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, did not release any information on the marketing, still expected this year, of the new Cambria high-end virtual reality headset intended for professional use.

Virtual reality headsets sit alongside a separate line of augmented reality smart glasses, which are meant to project hologram-like images onto the real world instead of enclosing their wearer behind a screen. But for the moment, Meta has prioritized the commercialization of virtual reality headsets, with the promising adoption rate in particular checked in by its consumer helmet, the second generation Meta Quest.

Le design du realme GT Neo 3 est plutôt sobre avec des formes assez conventionnelles. Ses profils sont très légèrement creusés avec un dos qui revient dessus ainsi que les bords latéraux de la dalle de l?écran sans que celui-ci ne soit incurvé pour autant. Le dos est très sobre, notre modèle de test noir propose un revêtement en plastique de couleur uniforme et ne laisse aucune trace de doigts. Plus fun, le realme GT Neo 3 est aussi décliné en bleu avec deux bandes blanches ou en blanc avec deux bandes noires, symbolisant la course automobile. Le bloc d?optiques est installé en haut à gauche sur une plaque en verre qui dépasse légèrement du reste de l?arrière de l?appareil. Il est exactement dans le même ton que la coque au dos ce qui fait qu?il reste discret. On voit bien le capteur principal qui veut dominer les capteurs secondaires situés juste en-dessous, séparés par un flash en position horizontale.

Si on fait le tour du smartphone, on remarque le châssis en plastique qui laisse passer les ondes pour les antennes intégrées. Le bouton de mise en veille est en opposition par rapport à ceux qui permettent de gérer le volume, situés sur le profil gauche. Sur le profil supérieur, il y a un microphone. Sur le profil inférieur, il y a un deuxième haut-parleur, le premier étant au niveau du sommet de l?écran, un autre microphone, le connecteur USB-C et le tiroir à cartes SIM. Il est possible d?en insérer deux simultanément sans pouvoir ajouter de carte mémoire pour augmenter la capacité de stockage interne de l?appareil.

Le realme GT Neo 3 est compatible 5G, Bluetooth et NFC. Il propose également du Wi-Fi 6E, soit la norme la plus avancée à ce jour pour ce type de réseau sans fil et donc le plus performant aussi bien en termes de portée que de débit. Certains peuvent regretter l?absence de prise audio jack mais cela aurait signifié un retour en arrière étant donné que son prédécesseur en était déjà dépourvu obligeant une écoute au casque à passer par une liaison Bluetooth ou un adaptateur USB-C vers jack.

Le smartphone propose un son stéréo. Il est compatible Dolby Atmos. Il est plutôt cohérent pour un tel appareil. Les voies sont particulièrement intelligibles lors de dialogues ou de commentaires et la distorsion est assez faible pour en apprécier l?écoute si on n?est pas trop exigeant non plus. Le tout manque cruellement de dynamisme malgré tout.

Le lecteur d?empreinte digitale est installé sous l?écran dans une position que nous trouvons définitivement trop basse puisqu?à seulement 1,5 cm du bord inférieur. Cela nous oblige à une petite gymnastique du pouce pour le poser dessus. Il s?est révélé extrêmement efficace lors de nos tests. Notez qu?il propose une fonction de lecture de la fréquence cardiaque ce qui signifie que vous n?avez qu?à poser le doigt dessus pour lire le nombre de battements par minute que fait votre c?ur.

Le realme GT Neo 3 n?est pas étanche, une fonction encore rare à ce niveau de prix sauf chez Samsung avec les Galaxy A33 5G et Galaxy A53 5G, par exemple.

Une large surface d?affichage assez lumineuse

L?écran est percé en haut au centre pour laisser la place au capteur photo frontal. Les bords latéraux sont assez larges et on sent également que le fabricant a fait un effort pour réduire au maximum les bordures inférieures et supérieures qui sont malgré tout légèrement plus épaisses. L?écran utilise une dalle AMOLED, comme sur le précédent realme GT Neo 2 mais avec une diagonale très légèrement supérieure puisqu?elle mesure 6,7 pouces pour le GT Neo 3 contre 6,62 pouces pour son aîné. La définition est identique : 1080×2400 pixels, soit comme la très grande majorité des définitions proposées sur les autres mobiles à quelques rares exceptions notamment pour les très haut de gamme qui peuvent monter jusqu?à 1440×3200 pixels.

Ne cherchez pas plus loin, il s?agit de la même dalle que celle qui est installée sur le realme GT 2 Pro avec la même fréquence de rafraîchissement de 120 Hz. Celle-ci est adaptative dans le sens où il est possible de choisir le mode dynamique auquel cas, c?est le smartphone qui détermine automatiquement la meilleure fréquence à utiliser selon les applications en cours d?usage afin d?optimiser la consommation d?énergie. On sait effectivement d?un écran rafraîchit 120 fois par seconde va consommer plus que le même qui l?est deux fois moins. Il est toutefois possible de bloquer la fréquence à 60 ou 120 Hz, dans les paramètres de l?appareil. Le taux d?échantillonnage est de 360 Hz ce qui permet d?avoir une bonne réactivité dans les jeux vidéo même si ce taux reste en deçà des smartphones spécialement conçus pour le gaming à l?image du Red Magic 7 Pro qui peut atteindre 960 Hz, par exemple ou plus abordable, le Poco F4 GT qui propose 480 Hz. Les réglages par défaut de l?écran du realme GT Neo 3 sont satisfaisants. Il est possible de choisir un mode couleur entre Vive, naturel, mode pro et de jouer avec la température des couleurs pour avoir un affichage plus adapté à vos envies. Un mode confort des yeux est disponible ainsi qu?un moteur d?optimisation du rendu pour les vidéos HDR. La luminosité offerte par la dalle est suffisante même en plein après-midi au soleil.

Un système agréable et fluide

Le realme GT Neo 3 est animé par le système Android 12 avec une surcouche logicielle realme UI 3. Nous avons pu tester l?appareil dans sa version RMX3563_11_A.08. La mise à jour de sécurité Android datait de début mai ce qui n?est pas si éloigné de notre phase de test qui s?est déroulée début juin. L?interface ressemble beaucoup à celle proposée au sein de ColorOS, le système embarqué sur les mobiles Oppo. Les paramètres sont organisés exactement de la même façon. On a droit à un très bon niveau de personnalisation avec des couleurs qui peuvent être puisées depuis l?image en fond d?écran pour une meilleure harmonisation. Il y a une barre latérale pour accéder rapidement à certaines applications ou fonctionnalités du mobile. Le gestionnaire multitâche permet de voir toutes les applications en cours d?exécution, de fermer certaines et d?en ouvrir d?autres via un écran scindé en deux. On peut changer la forme des icônes et leur style.

L?interface Google Discover est disponible en faisant glisser la page d?accueil vers la droite. Notez la présence d?un mode GT qui doit booster les performances de l?appareil. Celui-ci n?est pas activé par défaut (pour ne pas consommer inutilement) et se trouve assez bizarrement dans le menu Batterie. Pour ceux qui aiment s?adonner aux jeux vidéo, l?application Jeu permet d?avoir une interface qui centralise les jeux et les paramètres associés comme le fait de décrocher automatiquement sur le haut-parleur en cas d?appel, définir le style des notifications pour ne pas être trop dérangé (voire pas du tout) lors d?une session de jeu.

D?excellentes performances produites par ce smartphone

Le realme GT Neo 3 est animé par un processeur MediaTek 8100 qui est associé à 12 Go de mémoire vive. Notez la possibilité d?augmenter la capacité de RAM grâce à la fonction Extended RAM disponible dans les paramètres du mobile. Il est ainsi possible d?obtenir 3, 5 ou 7 Go supplémentaires pour un peu plus de fluidité lors de la navigation dans les menus et pour certaines applications qui pourraient en profiter. Toutefois, il faut reconnaître que le mobile livre d?excellentes performances et que nous n?avons constaté aucun ralentissement lors de nos tests, les applications se lançant avec une très bonne vélocité. Même soumis à des tâches complexes pendant un bon moment, le mobile est resté parfaitement tempéré ne chauffant pas plus que la moyenne. Il peut remercier le système de refroidissement intégré qui joue ici un rôle très efficace.

Comme tous les autres smartphones testés, nous l?avons soumis à plusieurs outils de mesure de performances dont voici les principaux résultats (à froid).

Que vaut-il en photo ?

Pour la partie photo, le realme GT Neo 3 dispose d?un capteur principal, le Sony IMX766 déjà largement éprouvé par d?autres modèles actuellement disponibles sur le marché comme le realme GT 2 Pro, le Xiaomi 12X, le Honor Magic4 Pro, le Oppo Find X5 mais aussi le realme 9 Pro+ ayant 50 mégapixels à bord et doté d?un stabilisateur optique pour limiter les bougés. Dans ce dernier, on trouve les modes : Pro, Pano(ramique), Ultra macro, Film, ralenti, Time-lapse, vidéo dual-view, scanner de texte. Le dos est très sobre, notre modèle de test noir propose un revêtement en plastique de couleur uniforme et ne laisse aucune trace de doigts. Plus fun, le realme GT Neo 3 est aussi décliné en bleu avec deux bandes blanches ou en blanc avec deux bandes noires, symbolisant la course automobile. Le smartphone propose un son stéréo. Il est compatible Dolby Atmos. Il est plutôt cohérent pour un tel appareil. Les voies sont particulièrement intelligibles lors de dialogues ou de commentaires et la distorsion est assez faible pour en apprécier l?écoute si on n?est pas trop exigeant non plus. Le tout manque cruellement de dynamisme malgré tout.

Le lecteur d?empreinte digitale est installé sous l?écran dans une position que nous trouvons définitivement trop basse puisqu?à seulement 1,5 cm du bord inférieur. Cela nous oblige à une petite gymnastique du pouce pour le poser dessus. Il s?est révélé extrêmement efficace lors de nos tests. Notez qu?il propose une fonction de lecture de la fréquence cardiaque ce qui signifie que vous n?avez qu?à poser le doigt dessus pour lire le nombre de battements par minute que fait votre c?ur.

Le realme GT Neo 3 n?est pas étanche, une fonction encore rare à ce niveau de prix sauf chez Samsung avec les Galaxy A33 5G et Galaxy A53 5G, par exemple.

Une large surface d?affichage assez lumineuse

L?écran est percé en haut au centre pour laisser la place au capteur photo frontal. Les bords latéraux sont assez larges et on sent également que le fabricant a fait un effort pour réduire au maximum les bordures inférieures et supérieures qui sont malgré tout légèrement plus épaisses. L?écran utilise une dalle AMOLED, comme sur le précédent realme GT Neo 2 mais avec une diagonale très légèrement supérieure puisqu?elle mesure 6,7 pouces pour le GT Neo 3 contre 6,62 pouces pour son aîné. La définition est identique : 1080×2400 pixels, soit comme la très grande majorité des définitions proposées sur les autres mobiles à quelques rares exceptions notamment pour les très haut de gamme qui peuvent monter jusqu?à 1440×3200 pixels.

Ne cherchez pas plus loin, il s?agit de la même dalle que celle qui est installée sur le realme GT 2 Pro avec la même fréquence de rafraîchissement de 120 Hz. Celle-ci est adaptative dans le sens où il est possible de choisir le mode dynamique auquel cas, c?est le smartphone qui détermine automatiquement la meilleure fréquence à utiliser selon les applications en cours d?usage afin d?optimiser la consommation d?énergie. On sait effectivement d?un écran rafraîchit 120 fois par seconde va consommer plus que le même qui l?est deux fois moins. Il est toutefois possible de bloquer la fréquence à 60 ou 120 Hz, dans les paramètres de l?appareil. Le taux d?échantillonnage est de 360 Hz ce qui permet d?avoir une bonne réactivité dans les jeux vidéo même si ce taux reste en deçà des smartphones spécialement conçus pour le gaming à l?image du Red Magic 7 Pro qui peut atteindre 960 Hz, par exemple ou plus abordable, le Poco F4 GT qui propose 480 Hz. Les réglages par défaut de l?écran du realme GT Neo 3 sont satisfaisants. Il est possible de choisir un mode couleur entre Vive, naturel, mode pro et de jouer avec la température des couleurs pour avoir un affichage plus adapté à vos envies. Un mode confort des yeux est disponible ainsi qu?un moteur d?optimisation du rendu pour les vidéos HDR. La luminosité offerte par la dalle est suffisante même en plein après-midi au soleil.

Un système agréable et fluide

Le realme GT Neo 3 est animé par le système Android 12 avec une surcouche logicielle realme UI 3. Nous avons pu tester l?appareil dans sa version RMX3563_11_A.08. La mise à jour de sécurité Android datait de début mai ce qui n?est pas si éloigné de notre phase de test qui s?est déroulée début juin. L?interface ressemble beaucoup à celle proposée au sein de ColorOS, le système embarqué sur les mobiles Oppo. Les paramètres sont organisés exactement de la même façon. On a droit à un très bon niveau de personnalisation avec des couleurs qui peuvent être puisées depuis l?image en fond d?écran pour une meilleure harmonisation. Il y a une barre latérale pour accéder rapidement à certaines applications ou fonctionnalités du mobile. Le gestionnaire multitâche permet de voir toutes les applications en cours d?exécution, de fermer certaines et d?en ouvrir d?autres via un écran scindé en deux. On peut changer la forme des icônes et leur style.

D?excellentes performances produites par ce smartphone

Le realme GT Neo 3 est animé par un processeur MediaTek 8100 qui est associé à 12 Go de mémoire vive. Notez la possibilité d?augmenter la capacité de RAM grâce à la fonction Extended RAM disponible dans les paramètres du mobile. Il est ainsi possible d?obtenir 3, 5 ou 7 Go supplémentaires pour un peu plus de fluidité lors de la navigation dans les menus et pour certaines applications qui pourraient en profiter. Toutefois, il faut reconnaître que le mobile livre d?excellentes performances et que nous n?avons constaté aucun ralentissement lors de nos tests, les applications se lançant avec une très bonne vélocité. Même soumis à des tâches complexes pendant un bon moment, le mobile est resté parfaitement tempéré ne chauffant pas plus que la moyenne. Il peut remercier le système de refroidissement intégré qui joue ici un rôle très efficace.
