Emergence of a neopelagic community through the establishment of coastal species on the high seas. Nature Communications, 2021; 12 (1) DOI: 10.1038/s41467-021-27188-6

?The issues of plastic go beyond just ingestion and entanglement,? said Linsey Haram, lead author of the article and former postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC). ?It?s creating opportunities for coastal species? biogeography to greatly expand beyond what we previously thought was possible.?

Gyres of ocean plastic form when surface currents drive plastic pollution from the coasts into regions where rotating currents trap the floating objects, which accumulate over time. The world has at least five plastic-infested gyres, or ?garbage patches.? The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, between California and Hawai?i, holds the most floating plastic, with an estimated 79,000 metric tons of plastic floating in a region over 610,000 square miles. While ?garbage patch? is a misnomer ? much of the pollution consists of microplastics, too small for the naked eye to see ? floating debris like nets, buoys and bottles also get swept into the gyres, carrying organisms from their coastal homes with them.

A New Open Ocean

The authors call these communities neopelagic. ?Neo? means new, and ?pelagic? refers to the open ocean, as opposed to the coast. Scientists first began suspecting coastal species could use plastic to survive in the open ocean for long periods after the 2011 Japanese tsunami, when they discovered that nearly 300 species had rafted all the way across the Pacific on tsunami debris over the course of several years. But until now, confirmed sightings of coastal species on plastic directly in the open ocean were rare.

For this discovery, Haram teamed up with Ocean Voyages Institute, a nonprofit that collects plastic pollution on sailing expeditions, and a pair of oceanographers from the University of Hawai?i at Manoa. The oceanographers, Jan Hafner and Nikolai Maximenko, created models that could predict where plastic was most likely to pile up in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. They shared that information with Ocean Voyages Institute.

One advantage of the institute, Haram ? now a fellow at the American Association for the Advancement of Science ? pointed out, is the low carbon footprint of its vessels. ?It can take a lot of energy to get out to the middle of the ocean with a gas-powered boat,? she said. ?So they use large-cargo sailing vessels to go around and remove plastics from the open ocean.?

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ocean Voyages Institute founder Mary Crowley and her team managed to collect a record-breaking 103 tons of plastics and other debris from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. She shipped some of those samples to SERC?s Marine Invasions Lab. There, Haram analyzed the species that had colonized them. She found many coastal species ? including anemones, hydroids and shrimp-like amphipods ? not only surviving, but thriving, on marine plastic.

A Sea of Questions

For marine scientists, the very existence of this ?new open ocean? community is a paradigm shift.

?The open ocean has not been habitable for coastal organisms until now,? said SERC senior scientist Greg Ruiz, who heads the Marine Invasions Lab where Haram worked. ?Partly because of habitat limitation ? there wasn?t plastic there in the past ? and partly, we thought, because it was a food desert.?

The new discovery shows that both ideas do not always hold true. Plastic is providing the habitat. And somehow, coastal rafters are finding food. Ruiz said scientists are still speculating exactly how ? whether they drift into existing hot spots of productivity in the gyre, or because the plastic itself acts like a reef attracting more food sources.

Now, scientists have another shift to wrestle with: How these coastal rafters could shake up the environment. The open ocean has plenty of its own native species, which also colonize floating debris. The arrival of new coastal neighbors could disrupt ocean ecosystems that have remained undisturbed for millennia.

?Coastal species are directly competing with these oceanic rafters,? Haram said. ?They?re competing for space. They?re competing for resources. And those interactions are very poorly understood.?

And then there is the invasive-species threat. Scientists have already seen that begin to play out with Japanese tsunami debris, which carried organisms from Japan to North America. Vast colonies of coastal species floating in the open ocean for years at a time could act as a new reservoir, giving coastal rafters more opportunities to invade new coastlines.

?Those other coastlines are not just urban centers?.That opportunity extends to more remote areas, protected areas, Hawaiian Islands, national parks, marine protected areas,? Ruiz said.

The authors still do not know how common these ?neopelagic? communities are, whether they can sustain themselves or if they even exist outside the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. But the world?s dependence on plastic continues to climb. Scientists estimate cumulative global plastic waste could reach over 25 billion metric tons by 2050. With fiercer and more frequent storms on the horizon thanks to climate change, the authors expect even more of that plastic will get pushed out to sea. Colonies of coastal rafters on the high seas will likely only grow. This long-overlooked side effect of plastic pollution, the authors said, could soon transform life on land and in the sea.

More than 100,000 Russian soldiers are ready at the border with Ukraine, and there is fear in Kiev that history will repeat itself. How would the West react to a Russian invasion? NATO is only partially ready to defend itself and now Russia is putting the USA under pressure.

VRobert Menendez, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the US Senate, spoke of a ?direct Russian invasion?. He called on the EU and NATO to support Ukraine in the fight against Russia with weapons. “We have to give Ukraine the opportunity to defend itself,” said Menendez.

That was in 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea and while Moscow destabilized eastern Ukraine with pro-Russian separatists. Seven years later, Russian soldiers march on the border with Ukraine. Ukraine speaks of 115,000 soldiers. Russia accuses Ukraine of having deployed more than 120,000 soldiers on the line to the pro-Russian separatist regions.

The Kremlin caught the Western alliance partially ready for defense. Germany is waiting for a new government, France is facing presidential elections.

Above all, however, there is a reluctance to foreign policy in the USA, the interventionists in both parties are on the retreat. Senator Menendez is still head of the Foreign Affairs Committee. So far, he has not called for arms deliveries to Ukraine.

Biden can’t afford to be humiliated

Politically battered President Joe Biden is under extreme pressure. Biden cannot afford to be humiliated by Putin. Even his own people put pressure on Biden. In the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Menendez fights for a whole range of sanctions, for example against high government officials and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. With a heavy heart, Biden actually gave the green light for this project in the summer.

The US president suffers from poor poll numbers. The mid-term elections in 2022 could be a disaster for his party, at the beginning of the end of his presidency. Republicans accuse Biden of being too soft when dealing with Putin, despite the fact that Donald Trump had cuddled Putin. Biden’s critics are now asking what brought the summit between Biden and Putin in June.

Now there should be another meeting between Biden and Putin, or at least that’s what Moscow is proposing. If, when and in what format? Not clear. Biden is in a dilemma. On the one hand, he wants to support Ukraine as much as possible and limit Russia’s aggressive ambitions. On the other hand, Ukraine is not a NATO member state, so it does not fall under the assistance obligation under Article 5.

Foreign policy realist Biden knows that majorities and conditions for medium-term NATO membership are not in sight. On the other hand, he must make it clear to Putin that it is not Russia that decides on Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but rather: Ukraine and NATO.

Meanwhile, many Americans are convinced that the US has no business outside of its borders. The foreign policy hawks have no influence. The fact that Russia is now asking the US to enter the talks about Ukraine is putting Washington under pressure. “Our American colleagues have not just said once that they want to help,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday at his meeting with his US colleague Antony Blinken in Stockholm.

The US had largely left operational responsibility for Ukraine to Berlin and Paris. In the so-called Normandy format, only France and Germany have so far mediated between Ukraine and Russia.

Lavrov called on NATO again on Thursday to end NATO’s eastward expansion. Old Fox Lavrov also knows that Ukraine’s membership of this kind is currently in the political stars. Robert Menendez himself ruled out sending US and NATO troops to Ukraine in 2014.

The new C-segment full hybrid SUV is coming, the electric bZ4x, the sporty GR86 and the Lexus NX plug-in: after a 2021 in full growth in Europe, all the strategies anticipated at the Kenshiki Forum

Roberto Speranza

The Corolla Cross hybrid medium SUV, the bZ4X, the brand’s first electric car, the GR86, the latest evolution of the traditional sports car, then Aygo X and Yaris GR Sport, without forgetting the Yaris Cross in its first full year of sale: a 2022 is looming for Toyota on the European markets. After a 2021 in which 1,070,000 units are estimated to be sold in our continent between cars and light commercial vehicles (of which, in Western Europe, 70% consists of electrified vehicles) with a market share of 6.3%; which places the Japanese manufacturer in second place in the ranking of automotive brands in Europe with Yaris, Corolla and Aygo in the top three positions in their respective segments. Important steps forward compared to 2019, when Toyota was not among the top five brands in this planetary region. And the forecasts for next year are even more optimistic: around 1.3 million vehicles and 6.5% in market share. These are the main innovations that emerged from the Toyota Kenshiki Forum, the year-end press conference in which the eastern giant illustrates future plans for Europe. The 2021 edition, held on 1 December in Brussels (again in attendance after the digital parenthesis twelve months ago) naturally reserved a lot of space for strategies for the next few years, all focused on the transition to zero-emission mobility.

Toyota’s future in Europe

?

The Japanese term “Kenshiki” indicates a condition of thought between knowledge and intuition, the intellectual exercise of reflecting on the future trying to anticipate it, using that set of skills and analytical skills that form the basis of a person’s culture. A word that precisely represents the substance of the forum that the Japanese manufacturer organizes annually in Europe and to which he has given this name. Compared to twelve months ago it was Matthew Harrison who did the honors. The British manager has been president and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe since last April, when he replaced Johan Van Zyl, who retired at the time and then passed away in July. In addition to presenting the models of close introduction on the continental markets, Harrison has particularly focused on the possible scenarios of the next decade, in which the current and under discussion regulations will lead to a disruption in the way in which vehicles will be admitted for sale. Toyota expects to achieve a mix of products sold in Europe by 2025 consisting of at least 10% zero-emission models and 80% self-charging and plug-in hybrids. Moving to 2030, the estimate rises to at least 50% of zero-emission vehicles. Estimate, in fact. Harrison specified that the forecast is mainly based on legislative requirements. Much will depend on the development of the infrastructure for charging the batteries and refilling the hydrogen tanks, as well as on the actual demand from customers. Electric cars, yes, but hybrids will continue to play an important role for many years to come. Finally, considerable resources will be allocated to the production and distribution of hydrogen in ways that do not increase carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Toyota Corolla Cross, the new hybrid SUV

?

Even the stones know it, Toyota was the first car manufacturer in the world to invest heavily in hybrid technology, it dates back to 1997 with the first Prius. And now the Japanese full hybrid system is in its fifth generation. The first model to use it will be released in the fall of 2022: Toyota Corolla Cross is its name. A medium-sized SUV, segment C, sits between the C-HR and the Rav4. Families are its target market. Therefore primary consideration for daily needs, such as space, practicality and low running costs. The hybrid system has become more powerful, has more torque and lighter batteries. And one of the most comprehensive driver assistance systems on the market.

Toyota bZ4X, the first electric car

?

Shortly after the global preview in Shanghai, the Kenshiki Forum showed the production version for Europe of the Toyota Bz4x, the first electric car of the Japanese house to arrive on the market, will be in Italy in May 2022. This car (the acronym bZ means “beyond zero”, beyond zero, in the sense of emissions) is also the first to arise from the new architecture that Toyota has expressly designed for electric vehicles, the eTnga platform. Suv bodywork, front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and at least 450 km of autonomy. All-wheel drive was developed together with Subaru, one of the manufacturers with the most experience in this field. On the battery, Toyota even offers an extended warranty for one million kilometers or ten years and 70% of the remaining capacity, in addition to the standard one for ten years or 240,000 kilometers.

Toyota GR86, the last of its kind

?

Traditional sports, in the sense of exclusively thermal engines, are a race in danger of extinction due to international regulations. But still for a while you can have fun with sensations of other times. Toyota and Subaru have revamped their rear-wheel drive coupe. Developed jointly, parts of the Pleiades call it Brz, while for Toyota it is the GR86. An acronym that indicates a tuning by the racing department, the Gazoo Racing. The engine is still the aspirated four-cylinder boxer, but the displacement has risen from 1,998 to 2,387 cc. Maximum power increased from 200 to 236 horsepower, delivered at 7,000 rpm. The maximum torque, in addition to having obviously increased (because the power has risen) comes much earlier: at 3,700 rpm against the 6,400 of the previous series, while the Newton meters went from 205 to 250. Consequently, the acceleration 0-100 gained a second, now I’m 6.3. Top speed of 226 km / h with manual gearbox, 216 if it is automatic. The Toyota GR86 will go on sale in Europe from spring 2022 and will only remain in production for two years.

Lexus NX 450h +, plug-in time

?

Sales targets for the premium Lexus brand are to exceed 130,000 units in Europe by 2025 with a 3% market share. This is no small feat: it is double the current volumes. During this time, 20 models will be launched. The first car will be the Lexus NX 450h +, the company’s first plug-in hybrid, arriving in mid-January. Its 74 km of electric range in the combined cycle Wltp and 97 on the urban route make it very interesting. In addition to an equally high overall efficiency. In fact, Lexus stated that, in urban traffic conditions, tests with major competitors showed consumption lower by 23%.

On the electric side as well, after the debut of the UX (of which 3,000 continental units are expected to be sold in 2022), it will be the turn of the RX, based on the new dedicated platform of the Toyota group, the e-Tnga.

Marco Rotelli back to the music scene after publication – a February 2021 – of the piece I wish i could fly, in duet with Carmen pierri. The new single by the Milanese singer-songwriter is called Free to fly; and it’s on the radio and in all store digital since 22 November 2021.

The song (MR Records) was written by Marco Rotelli lately; and tells a true story that deeply affected the artist. Free to fly speaks of a girl in her early thirties who grew up in the Milanese suburbs. The past of this girl is characterized by the use of drugs and alcohol, which have become real addictions. The story of the protagonist, however, is made of strength and tenacity. Thus, despite the many difficulties, she managed to get rid of those addictions, for herself, for the people who love her, and for her little girl.

In presenting Free to fly, Marco Rotelli tells: “Since I started writing songs, now several years ago, I have always told stories, moments, moods really lived. I never invented anything, I never pretended, at least in the songs I almost always managed to be honest?.

Speaking of the piece, he then adds: “Libera di Volare is the last song I wrote. It is an important song for me, not only because it is the last one written in chronological order but because it represents a piece of life lived intensely, arrived at a moment that I never would have thought. And that has disoriented many of my certainties, taking me to new worlds?.

Free to fly is accompanied by an official video clip, directed by Emmanuel Galli and visible on YouTube.

Preventing ?Alien? Invasions

Press Release
From: McGill University
Posted: Thursday, December 2, 2021

The search of life beyond our world is an exciting venture that may yield an enormous discovery in the not-too-distant future. However, space agencies around the world, including NASA and the European Space Agency, have long been aware of the potential risks of biological contamination and have set in place planetary protection policies. In the face of increasing space missions, including those intended to return samples to Earth, a recent article led by a McGill University researcher, advocates enhancing planetary biosecurity through collaborations between astrobiologists and invasion biologists.

Space missions to Mars and other planets and moons carry risks of biological contamination ? for both Earth and the planets targeted by space missions according to a recent article in BioScience. The paper, led by McGill University and written by researchers with expertise in biological invasions, astrobiology, and biosecurity, argues that planetary biosecurity should be informed by the knowledge gained by invasion science.

Space exploration – Risks of contamination for Earth and extraterrestrial ecosystems

?The likelihood of a live extraterrestrial organism hitching a ride, being successfully transported to Earth and establishing a foothold here is thought to be quite small,? says Anthony Ricciardi, the lead author, and a professor of Invasion Ecology & Aquatic Ecosystems at McGill University. ?But current biosecurity approaches must be enhanced to address these hazards as space missions increase in frequency and scale.?

Space exploration also risks contaminating extraterrestrial ecosystems. In fact, a diverse array of microbial strains exhibiting extreme resistance to ionizing radiation, desiccation, and chemical disinfectants have been discovered in NASA ‘clean rooms’ used for spacecraft assembly. The article suggests that planets and moons potentially containing life should be treated as ?insular systems?, like the oceanic islands and isolated areas on Earth (such as Hawaii, Australia or Antarctica) whose ecosystems have proven to be extremely sensitive to the effects of invasive alien species.

Keys to biosecurity: early detection and rapid response

The researchers argue that although such events are highly improbable, planetary biosecurity should be informed by the knowledge gained by invasion science. They suggest that protocols for early detection, hazard assessment, rapid response, and containment procedures that are currently employed for invasive species on Earth could be adapted for dealing with potential extraterrestrial contaminants. They highlight the importance of early detection and rapid response, in particular, in preventing the spread of alien biological contaminants.

?Early detection could be aided by new DNA-sequencing technologies,? adds Ricciardi. ?If coupled with diligently curated databases of the organisms found in the ?clean rooms? in which spacecraft are assembled, this would serve to help identify any invading species by eliminating those that might have been introduced accidently to other planets during previous space missions ? a conceivable possibility for Mars, which has been visited by over two dozen spacecraft to date.?

The researchers conclude that that while the search for life beyond our world may yield enormous discoveries, current biosecurity approaches must be enhanced to address any potential hazards related to ?alien? species, as space missions increase in frequency and scale.

Drastic measure in Geneva (Switzerland). Some 2,000 people, including 1,600 children, have been placed in quarantine after the discovery of two cases of the Omicron variant on one of the campuses of the renowned International School of Geneva, Swiss health authorities announced on Thursday (December 2nd).

“These two cases are closely linked within the family with a positive person returning from a trip from South Africa”, said the health services of the canton of Vaud, where the campus is located, and that of Geneva in a joint statement. According to the authorities, “this is the first measure of this magnitude” since the proven, but reduced, presence of Omicron in Switzerland this week.

“We have never yet observed contamination on the Geneva or Vaudois territories. This element requires us today, as a precautionary principle, to decide on strong measures.”

“It is essential to slow down the introduction of the variant in our territory. When identified, it is also essential to reduce transmission in Switzerland as much as possible”, they add. The quarantine is 10 days and students, like teachers at the Châtaigneraie campus, located near Geneva, will have to take a PCR test. This campus accommodates primary and secondary schools. Their families will also need to be screened for this variant, which was first reported in southern Africa at the end of November and has since been detected in dozens of countries.

The American Congress overcame, Thursday, December 2, a first obstacle to escape a paralysis of the American federal services this weekend, the famous shutdown that elected Republican officials seek to provoke in order to protest against the vaccine obligations of the Biden government.

The elected representatives of the House of Representatives approved a new finance law in the afternoon to try to avoid a sudden drain of the resources of the federal state on Friday at midnight, which would force hundreds of thousands of unemployed employees technical.

But this text, the result of long negotiations, must now go through the Senate stage where a single defection could prevent it from being adopted in time, the agreement of all elected officials being necessary to vote.

However, a handful of Republicans, most of them very close to Donald Trump, refuse this for the moment, arguing that the text would help finance Joe Biden’s decree which requires employees of companies with more than 100 people to be vaccinated, and which they oppose. One of them, Senator Mike Lee of the very conservative state of Utah, defended his decision Thursday. “Whether to choose between temporarily suspending non-essential activities and sitting idly by” in the face of this vaccination decree, he pleaded, “I will support American workers, every time”.

Ministries but also national parks and a multitude of American organizations would be affected if the threat of these elected officials was carried out. The winter 2018 shutdown, the longest to date, had notably affected the control of baggage in airports, a mess that the vast majority of elected Congressmen do not want before the holidays.

Read also Five questions about the “shutdown” in the United States

“So stupid”

Anxious to avoid this very unpopular situation among Americans, parliamentary officials from both camps are calling on the dissenters to change their minds as a matter of urgency. “It’s so stupid that people opposed to science, to vaccination, say they are going to block the federal state because of it”, lambasted the Democratic President of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

Despite these negotiations, Joe Biden was confident Thursday afternoon. “There is a strategy in place” to avoid a shutdown he said during a trip, “Unless someone decides to behave completely insane”.

It is certainly very common for very last minute deals to be found on temporary budgets. But the situation was uncertain enough that several economists began to quantify the price of this possible blockage, valuing it at a few billion dollars per week.

Debt, army, maternal

The urgency is twofold because parliamentarians must in parallel tackle before the holidays to a set of specifications that are just as crucial. In addition to this finance law, elected officials are expected to adopt a separate defense budget.

Even more urgent, they have until December 15 to raise the debt capacity of the United States in order to avoid the first sovereign default of the world’s largest economic power. Otherwise America could find itself strapped for cash and unable to meet its payments, a potentially catastrophic situation that major powers around the world are watching closely.

If Congress manages to get rid of these sites in time, it will finally be able to debate the gigantic component of social and ecological investments wanted by Joe Biden, which the White House is impatiently awaiting. This $ 1,750 billion project, which provides, among other things, free kindergarten for all and generous funding to reduce American greenhouse gas emissions, has been stuck for months in the limbo of the American Parliament.

However, Joe Biden is desperately counting on these measures, very popular with Americans according to the polls, to relaunch his presidency. The leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate has pledged that this text be adopted before Christmas. This scenario, like so many others in Congress, remains very uncertain for the time being.

The representation in the cinema is more important than you think. Although there are currently many complaints about the supposed forced inclusion or that “we don’t have to see them all the time,” the truth is that it has been shown that it is necessary and that it does cause important changes among the public. Makkari’s character in Eternals – 58% were so popular that searches on sign language increased, while stories with trans characters like Sense8 – 67% o Euphoria – 76%, have managed to remove various stigmas that caused dangerous and ignorant cliches in the middle. Of course, just because this is happening now doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tried for years, as Keanu Reeves has just confirmed about The Matrix – 87%.

The Matrix was a revolutionary movie in every way. From the complexity of the philosophy-based script to the technological advances that had to be created to do justice to the vision of the Wachowski sisters, the film remained one of the great references in the history of cinema. In addition, he also made it clear that Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski had every intention of continuing to search for equally momentous stories. Although Matrix Reloaded – 73% and Matrix: Revolutions – 36% were not the expected success, the directors went ahead with other titles that, although misunderstood, are highly respected by their fans such as Cloud Atlas – 66%.

Unfortunately, the private lives of the Wachowski sisters were widely criticized and this came to overshadow their work and the messages they sought to make known. The current context is very different, so the arrival of Matrix Resurrections, directed solely by Lana, will serve to see the story we already know from an updated perspective. To no one’s surprise, Reeves recently revealed that the original script for Matrix It included a trans character, thus confirming what we already know, that the Wachowskis do not do things for fashion, but because they are issues that they consider essential to address.

This information that Reeves gave to Entertainment Weekly, confirms something that fans and readers of the script already knew. On Matrix A character named Switch appears, played by Belinda McClory, who was originally a figure that represented the trans community and who in the Matrix was presented as a woman and in reality as a man. The actor remembers that detail as another revolutionary point of the project, but that could not be given at that time.

I think the studio was not ready for that.

Although the actor does not delve further into the matter, it is evident, from other antecedents, that the producer considered this decision a risk. After all, at that time there was still a lot of prejudice about gays, not to mention someone trans, and the studios did not want to lose money on such “dangerous” topics. Now what Keanu Reeves mentions it, and that we are close to the premiere of Matrix Resurrecciones, surely the subject will be debated again, but it is not the first time that it is mentioned.

In 2020, in an interview for Netflix (via New York Post), Lilly Wachowski He explained the decision that was made at the time about Switch and why he does not see it as something entirely negative:

The corporate world was not ready for that. Everything in the Matrix was about the desire for transformation, but it came from a point of view of someone who was still in the closet.

Even without the trans character, Lilly considers that her own message Matrix it’s a story about the trans process that she eventually went through. Also, over the years he has come to realize that the movie became something of a lifeline for many people in the LGBTQ community.

Matrix Resurrecciones It will premiere on December 22 and the team has managed to keep a secret story that, they say, will live up to the first installment. For now, fans are questioning many aspects, such as the presence of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus instead of Laurence Fishburne, and how Neo is once again inside the Matrix without remembering his mission and his status as the chosen one.

Final Fantasy IV will play a fundamental role in the story of Final Fantasy XIV, not only in secondary aspects such as mounts and minions. Here because.

To prepare you worthily for the new chapter in the history of Final Fantasy XIV, it’s worth taking a look at Endwalker’s references to Final Fantasy IV, which, you’ll soon find out, go far beyond mounts and minions. A few days after the release of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, it’s time to get ready for all the news coming: finish the main story quests and level up your side jobs, first of all. Not only that, though: it’s also time to fortify your knowledge of FFIV, so that you can deepen the story by grasping every aspect. To help you on this journey, here’s an explanation of the more explicit elements taken from Final Fantasy IV, as well as the story passages the two games have in common.

Add 4 to 14 –

Although Endwalker isn’t out yet, you can see FFIV influences all over the place. Towards the end of Shadowbringers, the previous expansion, the development team began this process of implementing Lunar Bahamut. Fandaniel, an ascian who wants to kill lots of people and destroy the world of Eorzea, summons an altered version of many primals, including il Lunar Bahamut. This creature is only an optional boss in FFIV, but the Lunar Bahamut has created a connection between that game and FFXIV, at the same time indicating that the Moon will play an important role in the story from here on out.

The connection between the two games was confirmed at the FFXIV Fan Festival, when the trailer for Endwalker was unveiled. Square Enix also announced new items for the Mogstation shop: three new minions and a new mount, all originally part of the main FFIV story.

The three minions are based on the main cast of characters from FFIV. You can buy Rosa for your collection: she is a childhood friend of the main character, Cecil. There’s also Edge, an edgy ninja and prince of Eblan. The third character you can have with you is a miniaturized version of Rydia. As a young man, Rydia met Cecil after he and his friend Kain attacked her village and killed her mother, defeating the eidolon she had summoned. Eventually, she finds herself following Cecil and her party. During their journey, however, she falls into the ocean and is taken from Leviathan to Feymarch, where time passes faster. When she reunites with Cecil and the others, she is already a young woman and a powerful summoner.

As if that weren’t enough, having these three important characters reunited with the Warrior of Light in Eorzea, players can also fly in their next adventure in full FFIV style. The Lunar Whale eight-player mount It may attract a lot of attention due to its size and price, but it’s also an integral part of the FFIV story. Once they discover the truth about what is happening, the characters must leave for the moon. To do this, they have to use a strange whale-shaped spaceship.

Other FFIV-inspired elements were teased in the latest Live Letter, which unveiled the tomestone gear sets. In FFXIV, these sets can be bought using tomestone, a specific currency that is acquired by completing various tasks. They are an important part of a player’s routine, as they usually need to be used to get the best pieces of gear that can be obtained with a new patch. New sets have been introduced at the beginning and during the life cycle of the new expansions, and that won’t change with Endwalker. Some of the new pieces of equipment have been shown since producer e director Naoki Yoshida, and among them are some based on the main characters of FFIV. For example, tank players will be able to purchase Cecil’s armor, ninjas will be able to use Edge’s, and Rydia’s outfit will likely be suited to summoners. The connections go beyond the aesthetic aspects, however. Cecil’s story is the heart of Endwalker.

The end of a journey –

Ever since it came out, Final Fantasy XIV has always been a playground for fans of the series. There have been tons of crossovers with other titles in the saga but choosing FFIV for this specific moment in the game’s history it’s really symbolic by the development team.

Upon the announcement of Endwalker, Naoki Yoshida explained that it would be the last expansion that would cover the story that began with A Realm Reborn. His statement was misunderstood and many thought it would be the end of the game, but this chapter is meant only to close the story of the conflict between the two entities involved in the main narrative so far: Hydaelyn e Zodiark. After that, the game will take new directions, immersing fans in different stories.

New stories, changes, perspectives and the idea of ??transition are key parts of both FFIV and FFXIV. In each expansion of FFXIV, the protagonist acquires new jobs (the classes of this MMO). In Shadowbringers, you start out as a knight. In the Endwalker trailer, the Warrior of Light appears, walking on the moon and wearing the glittering metal armor of a paladin complete with a sword and shield. This same change happens to the protagonist of FFIV, Cecil. At the beginning of the game, Cecil is a dark knight who works as the captain of an airship called Red Wings. During his journey, after defeating his demons, he transforms into a paladin.

Final Fantasy XIV influenced by FFIV: how and why

The transformation Cecil arrives when he discovers that his father was a Lunarian, a member of the advanced civilization hibernating on the Moon. Changing his job (i.e. class) symbolizes his inner transformation as a person. This gives players a lot to think about what we might see in Endwalker. In Shadowbringers, it is shown that even Hydaelyn is not purity embodied as previously thought and that too much light can hurt a world that should aim for balance. The main story implies that the main character’s spirit may have come from the original Ascians, another little piece of information that ends up relativizing the world as known until then. Will players uncover the truth behind the Warrior of Light’s origins? Is something fundamental about to change in the protagonist?

It’s unclear if the new expansion will delve into these themes, but it would make sense if the story pointed to reflect that of FFIV. The expectations are huge for Endwalker, considering the position that Final Fantasy XIV occupies today – that is, that of one of the best Final Fantasy ever made. Whether or not it respects these expectations, it is not yet known. But, considering what has already been shown to the public and all the possibilities that FFIV opens up to the Endwalker narrative, it is clear how much the development team is striving to create a memorable experience for fans of the saga.
