Wall Street closed green on Thursday, the second day it regained ground after the volatility unleashed by the omicron variant of the coronavirus. All three US indices advanced and investors went for value over growth. Small businesses and transport, sensitive to the economic cycle, outperformed the market as a whole.

Of the three major indices, the Dow Jones gained the most, and Boeing Co. was the value that most drove the Industrial Average.

The Dow Jones added 1.8% 575.03 points, to 34,597.07, while selective S&P 500 it advanced 1.4% or 56.26 units, to 4,569.40. The composite market index Nasdaq, in which the technology companies with the highest capitalization are listed, gained 0.8% or 127.27 integers, up to 15,381.32.

?The S&P 500 was 29 days in a row without a 1% variation, neither up nor down, but omicron arrives and in five days we have had this burst of volatility“Said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial.

?After the worst two-day drop in over a year, we’re finally seeing a bit of a reboundDetrick added. “Buyers are starting to pick after the recent weakness and pushed stocks higher, but omicron’s uncertainty is still there.”

As the world’s governments scramble to determine how to respond to the emerging omicron variant of COVID-19, The United States is set to require private health insurance companies to provide home testing, a policy expected to take effect on January 15.

The omicron variant has put nervous to the markets for about a week, especially affecting the values ??related to the travels, as they have enacted a mosaic of new restrictions around the world, but companies rallied in Thursday’s session.

The S&P indices 1500 Airlines and Hotel and Restaurants they ended the session with a sharp rise.

Data on applications for unemployment benefit and the layoffs projected once again demonstrated that entrepreneurs are increasingly reluctant to lay off in a tight labor market, a result of the demand boom that collides with the shortage of workers and low participation in the labor market.

Labor shortages, combined with persistent supply chain constraints, supply, has contributed to erase the word “transitory? From the vocabulary on inflation in the Federal ReserveAs wages and prices continue to rise, which could translate into a rate hike sooner and faster than many expected.

Market players are now turning their gaze to the expected November Labor Department employment report, expected on Friday.

?We are optimistic that we will have another solid figure, which suggests that the economy remains on a very strong footing.Detrick added. “We are attentive to the growth of wages in case there is any indication of possible inflationary concern.”

Rui Moreira denounces the carrier’s alleged treatment of privilege to Lisbon: “We understand the strategy, what we don’t like is to pay the bill for it”. From left to right, the entire Invicta against “the centralist strategy” of the flag company.

On the same day, this Thursday, in which JN exposed the reduction to historic levels of the public service provided by TAP at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport – only one in ten passengers passing through Pedras Rubras travel with the national airline -, the Porto mayor, Rui Moreira, added more criticism to the management of the company rescued by the State, which is accused of favoring Lisbon airport, to the detriment of others.

“TAP has its “hub” in Lisbon and, therefore, it has no use for the city of Porto. It is part of the Government’s strategy for TAP, however much the Government hides it. It is the last imperial company, it has as its only strategy to be a “hub” company, and its “hub”, admittedly, is Lisbon”, declared Rui Moreira.

“We fully understand – added the mayor – that TAP is relevant to Lisbon and that Lisbon is relevant to TAP. We just don’t like to be paying the bill for that, and we demand a set of resources for the region to attract other companies airlines”.

Requirement for other direct flights

The mayor of Porto also asks for more involvement from the Metropolitan Area of ??Porto – “It would be better for the AMP to concentrate on making demands of the Government, not least because most mayors are the color of the Government” – and demands “resources to attract direct” long-haul and intercontinental flights.

“It is very important that we have Emirates again, that we increase the frequency of Turkish, that we have United Airlines, British Airways, KLM. TAP is better off not coming and therefore spare us this disgrace, but compensating Porto. But also Faro. In Faro, the situation is worse,” said the Porto mayor.

Moreira’s position is in line with the exhibition signed by the municipal Executive and sent, in July, to deputies elected by the electoral circle of Porto. “I did not vote in favor of it, because it was required that the alternative be Ryanair or another private. We do not agree with that. TAP has to play this role”, says Ilda Figueiredo, councilor at CDU.

“TAP and the Government have to review the strategy. They must pay full attention here to the North and re-establish the routes that already existed in Pedras Rubras, to the world, to Europe, to Portuguese-speaking countries and to countries where there are communities of emigrants. It must be done urgently. This is the central issue and we have defended it several times, in the Chamber and in the Assembly of the Republic”, underlined Ilda Figueiredo.

“Ghastly charge”

Alberto Machado, PSD councilor in the Porto Chamber, verifies, for his part, that “to justify the thousands of euros that each Portuguese has already paid, TAP has to be much more than this”.

“Contrary to what they wanted to sell, TAP is not a flagship company. It must be closed down or re-privatized, so that we can get rid of this dreadful burden”, adds Alberto Machado.

From Brussels – where he sees how “it is incredible that TAP does not have flights from Porto to the capital of Europe” – Sérgio Aires, councilor of the Left Block in the Porto Chamber, cuts short and concludes: “The Block’s position is the usual and it can be summed up in one sentence – TAP must have a North. And ANA, which is also part of the same package as the problem, must be renationalised. Porto has become a stop and low-cost contributes to the monoculture of tourism, which poses serious problems for the city and the region.”

Railway and “responsible and sustainable policies”

From Lisbon and the Assembly of the Republic, deputy Bebiana Cunha, from PAN, observes that the national carrier, “with the connivance or the support of the Government, has not prioritized Porto in terms of its service as a final destination at Francisco Sá Airport RAM”.

“TAP refers as positive the increase from 5% to 10% in the volume of passengers from the second to the third quarter [ndr: de facto, segundo o antepenúltimo relatório trimestral (Abril-Junho deste ano) da Associação Nacional da Aviação Civil, a companhia nacional detinha 12% da cota de passageiros em Pedras Rubras], but it had 20% in the fourth quarter of 2019”, stresses Bebiana Cunha.

“Nevertheless – said the deputy -, for the PAN it is essential that urgent investment be made in the railroad. We should be debating international connections in this way”.

Bebiana Cunha gives the example of the Porto-Bragança-Zamora-Madrid railway connection and urges the Government to follow “responsible and sustainable policies”, which “are not made at the expense of such pressure on the city and on citizens, for via low-cost companies”.

“They are done with structured responses, to really respond to needs, something in which we have too many years of delay in Portugal”, concluded the PAN deputy, who ran for the Porto Chamber in the last municipal elections.

Another deputy running for the Porto Chamber in the September municipal councils, socialist Tiago Barbosa Ribeiro, a councilor without a portfolio, says that “although it has been increasing its routes at the intercontinental level”, TAP “remains, manifestly, not serving the interests of Porto and regional cohesion”.

“It seems to me that it is necessary to maintain constructive criticism and the demand that TAP, as a public company, serve the national whole, Porto, by the way, and the other airports, in addition to Lisbon”, concludes Tiago Barbosa Ribeiro.

Toyota Yaris GR Sport officially debuted in Europe. This new variant comes with cosmetic improvements for a better appearance.

The Japanese brand adds new launches to the third generation of one of its most representative models in the ?City Car? segment. It is the new sports variant Toyota Yaris GR Sport for Europe that offers novelties in its aesthetics for a more imposing appearance.

At the moment this new version is only available for the old continent market, but its offer is expected to expand to new markets later on. Although it received no power improvements, the style and suspension they bring that sporty spicy touch to Toyota’s supermini hybrid.

This new look is possible thanks to the work of the Toyota Gazoo Racing department. While it’s easy to mistake this model for the three-door Toyota GR Yaris, this Sport represents another level of equipment which condenses the existing Icon, Design, Dynamic and Excel options into the regular Yaris range.

Details of the Yaris GR Sport

Among the novelties that the Toyota Yaris GR Sport brings us with respect to its regular variant, we have the color Gris Dynamic exclusive to the brand’s GR Sport, but used for the first time in the Yaris. This hatch is fitted with a new design of multi-spoke alloy wheels from 18 inches. These are retouched with red details that give meaning to the muscular fenders.

On the front it shows a new mesh grille “G motif” Shiny black with Gazoo Racing insignia. Seen from behind, it boasts a redesigned diffuser in the shape of a “T” that gives the illusion of a more robust Yaris GR Sport than it really is. Inside, at first glance its sports steering wheel in leather with red stitching.

Likewise, it offers new seats with special upholstery and integrated headrest. These incorporate the red accents with standard fabric upholstery or Ultra suede optionl. To its ‘styling’ are added the start buttons and the control panel that are consistent with the personality of the model.

The heart of the hatch

On the mechanical level, the main novelties are in the vehicle’s suspension. They have replaced the shock absorbersfront and rear s to offer a firmer moron from low speeds without affecting driving comfort. This is fused with the modified electronic power steering that it will offer improvements in speed and precision.

Its powertrain can be combined with the gasoline engine 1.5-liter VVT-i what produces 123 Hp of power or with the propulsion system 1.5-liter hybrid that delivers 114 Hp combined. In the former case, power is transmitted to the front axle via a six-speed iMT intelligent manual transmission, while the hybrid gets the CVT.

A few days before presenting the budget for the year 2022 at the last board of directors of the year, Frédéric Sanaur, director general of the National Sports Agency (ANS), does not hide his satisfaction. While the critics have not completely ceased on the role and the resources allocated to the agency, it will be able to rely on credits of 451 million euros in 2022, against 380 million this year.

« We have several objectives through this 2022 budget. First, to engage in the strongest possible way the deployment of Blue Ambition on high performance and high level. It means installing the 2024 high performance cells », Details Frédéric Sanaur, specifying that a dozen federations have already set up these cells intended to win medals in 2024. The credits intended for the high level thus go from 104 million euros in 2021 to 118 in 2022.

A plan to build local facilities

« It is an additional lever to support the performance contracts of the federations, to initiate the 2024 coach plan (announced by Claude Onesta, high performance manager within the ANS), better support athletes in the high performance circle “, Continues the general manager before adding:” The last axis of Blue Ambition is the regional performance houses “. These houses are intended to support athletes on a daily basis in the region and the first was inaugurated last fall at the CREPS (center of resources, expertise and sports performance) of Châtenay-Malabry in the Hauts-de-Seine.

The increase in the ANS budget results mathematically from the plan of 200 million euros announced in October by President Emmanuel Macron to renovate or build 5,000 local facilities by 2024, which will pass through the accounts of the agency at a rate of 100 million in 2022, 50 in 2023 and as many in 2024. ” We have identified the different types of equipment, asked the federations to make us projects, calculated the financial volumes for each of the equipment and we consult the local authorities. The desire is for the federations to structure themselves through the sports facilities that they will be able to run, all of this being done in conjunction with the territories. », Details Frédéric Sanaur.

The ANS will help finance 1000 dojos

Several of them already had their plans, such as the French hand and basketball federations or even judo. The FFJDA inaugurated in October in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) the first of its 1,000 local dojos in the cities. The ANS is in the process of signing an agreement with the federation to participate in the financing of the 999 others.

In 2022, between 2,000 and 2,500 facilities will be built or renovated thanks to these credits. The average price of 40,000 euros, established by dividing the number of equipment by the overall budget, will not necessarily be the norm. ” We can make the big difference by financing the construction of 4 table tennis tables in a public park as well as the construction of a connected basketball sports hall. », Adds Frédéric Sanaur.

A ?big gap? of 10,000 to 1 million euros, knowing that the system makes it possible to finance between 50 and 80% of the project, 100% overseas. ” The range should be between 10,000 and 500,000 euros ?Says the former director general of the French Athletics Federation who sweeps aside the reproach of a plan that comes a little late.

« In 2021, we deployed the recovery plan and this unprecedented program comes at a time when we are ready to deploy it. We can clearly see that if we want to breathe new life into the development of sport in France, after a period and a complicated health context for several months, this local equipment will boost daily sports practice and this is very positive. He insists.

« For each equipment project, we will ask for a usage agreement between communities, schools, sports associations in order to guarantee free access slots so that we can practice in an organized way but also come alone, with our friends. or his colleagues, his retirement club… », continues the director who says he continues to work on the financing of larger and more expensive equipment such as gymnasiums, stadiums, swimming pools.

Peña Sport: Mendioroz, Sádaba, Perujo (Aguirrebeña, min.73), Mikel González, Gorka Jiménez, Alonso, Ozcáriz, Fermín Úriz (Satrústegui, min.58), Cubillo (Ilintxeta, min.58), Iván Martínez (Aser Albes, min.58) y Mikel Olcoz (Lizarraga, min.73).

Málaga: Dani Barrio, Calero, Casas, D. Lombán (Peybernes, min.45), Cufre (Jiménez, min.46), Escassi (Genaro, min.70), Ismael Gutiérrez, Paulino (Antoñín, min.45), Haitam (Lorenzo, min.54), Jairo y Roberto Fernández.

Goles: 0-1, min.32: Paulino.

The Secretariat (Ministry) of Foreign Affairs of Mexico (SRE), said in a statement that, after the dialogue held between both governments through the technical working group on migration and development, Washington ? has communicated to the Government of Mexico that it will address all humanitarian concerns regarding the re-implementation ?of the program.

The program returns asylum seekers to Mexico to wait in that territory for the decisions made by the US immigration courts, It takes more than three years in some cases.

The Mexican government, which without its consent the program could not be reinstated, also said that, by virtue of the fact that the United States Government has accepted the humanitarian concerns presented, “It has decided that, for humanitarian reasons and temporarily, certain migrants who have an appointment to appear before an immigration judge in the United States to request asylum in that country will not return to their countries of origin”.

Brief history of the program

The MPP, also known as Stay in Mexico, was activated in January 2019 and discontinued in January 2021, when President Joe Biden took control of the White House.

According to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), some 70,000 immigrants who came to the southern border requesting asylum were returned. In March of this year, some 25,000 cases were active and the rest were either rejected or the refugee petitioners did not appear at their court hearings, mainly due to errors in the Notices of Appearance (NTA).

Among the conditions presented by Mexico and accepted by the Biden government, include “increasing resources for shelters and international organizations, protection for vulnerable groups, consideration of local conditions of security and capacity for shelter and care of the Institute. National Migration Agency (INM), as well as the application of measures against COVID-19, such as medical check-ups and the availability of vaccines for migrants subject to both the MPP and Title 42 of the United States Code “, explained the SRE .

The Government of Mexico also said that it “reiterated its commitment to the human rights of migrants, as well as to maintain orderly, safe and regular migration.”

The Washington Post newspaper said that the MPP resumption would begin in the Brownsville and Laredo (Texas) areas, according to two sources quoted by the newspaper.

In April, three months after the MPP was canceled, the Republican-ruled states of Texas and Missouri amended Biden’s immigration policy and demanded the reinstatement of Trump’s asylum program.

In the lawsuit, filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, in the Northern District Court of Texas, Amarillo division, they said the return of the controversial policy will put a stop to the “Criminal and humanitarian crisis on the border” between the two countries.

They further noted that the MPP “restricts the ability of undocumented aliens to remain in the United States during immigration proceedings, greatly reducing the burden on state and federal agencies charged with defending our border.”

“President Biden could immediately remedy the influx of crime across our border by reinstating the program,” they added.

The arguments add that ?dangerous criminals are taking advantage of loopholes in law enforcement and is resulting in human trafficking, smuggling, a plethora of violent crimes, and a massive and unprecedented burden on state and federal programs to the ones that taxpayers must pay the bill, “Paxton said.

The official added that “we cannot allow this illegality to destroy our communities any longer. President Biden must act.”

On August 14, Federal Judge Matthew J. Kacsmary, in a 53-page decision, ordered the Biden administration to restore the MPP.

In the decision, the court found that the government “failed to analyze many critical factors” such as benefits of the program and that ending it had been illegal and harmful. “

Kacsmaryk also opined that the MPP discouraged migrants who did not qualify for asylum from coming to the United States. And by reversing the program, the judge found that harm was caused to the plaintiff states because by releasing the migrants they were allowed to use health services, apply for a driver’s license and go to school, in the case of the migrants. kids.

In mid-October, DHS said, through a statement, that it was taking the necessary steps to comply with the court order “that obliges us to re-implement the MPP in good faith.” And that everything depended on whether Mexico agrees to receive asylum seekers in its territory.

The program cannot be resumed without the consent of Mexico, as recognized by the Amarillo (Texas) federal court in its ruling. “Mexico is a sovereign nation that must make an independent decision to accept the return of individuals without status in Mexico as part of any re-implementation of the MPP,” said the DHS statement at the time, also posted on Twitter.

As DHS reactivates the MPP in compliance with the court order issued in August, in early November the ministry announced a new memorandum that will end the program, but its validity will have to wait until the end of the trial that keeps it alive.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement that the government “is tackling long-standing problems that have plagued our immigration system for decades to bring about the necessary systemic change.” And that the MPP “does not help to achieve this goal.”

Mayorkas explained that “the MPP had endemic flaws, imposed unjustifiable human costs, diverted resources and personnel from other priority efforts, and failed to address the root causes of irregular migration.”

The US national security chief further said that the program not only “undermined the government’s ability to implement fundamental changes to the immigration system, but it did not provide the fair process and humanitarian protections that people deserve under the law. “.

In a recent letter sent to the government by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), which groups some 15,000 members nationwide, said that people subject to PPM face “serious obstacles” in obtaining legal advice, “a situation that affects due process and opportunities to win your asylum cases, an available legal recourse.

It adds that immigrants and their attorneys face extreme dangers and hardships navigating this policy, and that in the past two years it has become clear that this program ?violates due process and the defendants’ right to a fair day in court. ?And should not be implemented again.

It should be noted that the cases returned to Mexico are added to the queue of pending cases in the Immigration Court (EOIR) that adds up to more than 1.4 million accumulated files. And on average the resolution of a case can take more than 3.2 years.

AILA also points out that the rate of legal representation under the MPP is less than 7.5%, which means that the percentage of cases won is minimal to the detriment of people fleeing their countries in search of asylum in the United States.

In turn, those who wait for their audiences in high-risk areas are left homeless, living in extreme poverty and exposed to inclement weather.

Currently some 3,000 MPP cases are registered in the UNHCR database. The international agency hopes that the program will be reinstated, in accordance with the court order, to continue collaborating in the asylum processes.

Almost all the great figures in the middle-fund are there: Sara Moreira, Dulce Félix, Jessica Augusto, Rui Pinto, Ricardo Ribas, Licínio Pimentel, Rui Pedro Silva, José Moreira, Fernando Serrão, Catarina Ribeiro, Salomé Rocha, Solange Jesus, Susana Godinho, Hermano Ferreira, Laura Taborda, Doroteia Peixoto, Emanuel Rolim, Marisa Barros, Hélio Gomes… And no, that’s not all: there are also athletes from other specialties there – from Cátia Azevedo to Ana Cabecinha, from Tsanko Arnaudov to Vera Barbosa ….

All of these and a few more are the subscribers of a press release from high competition athletes that I have certainly seen shake national athletics – shared on their social networks under a black background with the symbol next to the Portuguese Athletics Federation..

Blasting, is the least that can be said of him. The fuse that ignited the dispute was ignited during the controversial last edition of the Portuguese Cross Country Championships and gained even more gunpowder when the selections for the European Championships were known?

The contestants assume it when opening the first line of attack: “Current athletics is not what we want for us athletes, nor the most suitable for sporting success” – and, in the statement that they all shared on their social networks, they shoot a few more logs for the bonfire, talking about the «deafening silence» around the «lack of organizational capacity of a National Championship, which, in addition to harming the performance of athletes present in it, had consequences for individual and collective classification».

The cut of a sickle, denounced him: «This management still does not demonstrate the necessary skills to lead an entity as important as the Portuguese Athletics Federation» – and, in the end they make to the document, they make clear what they want for the future: «Remember that the Portuguese Athletics Federation is at the service of Athletes, Coaches and Clubs and not the opposite, as has been shown in recent times. Thus, we ask you to reflect on the matter, and if you feel that you have given everything to the sport and that you are not able to change this paradigm, then you will certainly come to the conclusion that you only have one option, resignation. We want serious people, with ideas and willingness to work, to provide us with a better future. We want an innovative sport, with values ??and that can serve our young people, giving them the necessary conditions to see athletics as a way to make their dreams come true».

RELEASE

Dear Sirs,

In this way, we see, given the multiple events, whether the most recent, as well as others, which over the years have affected our sport (athletics), the time has come to say enough and show in a clear and transparent way, all our displeasure. Athletics today is not what we want for us athletes, nor is it the most suitable for sporting success, our sport has been buffeted by bad driving and is heading towards a path of no return.

By this we want to say that we have reached a point where we have verified that this is not the direction that our sport should follow, unfortunately we have verified that this direction continues without demonstrating the necessary skills to lead an entity as important as the Portuguese Athletics Federation.

The most recent cases are: the lack of organizational capacity of a National Championship, which, in addition to harming the performance of the athletes present in it, had consequences in the individual and collective classification. Several days have passed and a deafening silence remains over this case, once again demonstrating that the President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation only appears in good times, not showing his face when the Federation he represents harms athletes and clubs, giving a bad image for the entire community of this modality and beyond. Finally, as athletes, it is difficult for us to understand how it is possible for a Federation to publish selection criteria where the dominant note is the lack thereof, thus indicating the lack of organization and understanding that reigns within the institution itself, as well as it is not understandable do not bet on the European Championship by filling all available places, as we understand that only in this way can we provide international contacts for our young people, so that they can grow as athletes and improve their competitive level.

Contrary to what you might think, this Federation was not chosen by us, we know that they recently won some elections and this will be the argument that those responsible will use to defend themselves, however, despite there being an Association of High Competition Athletes, which it should be the representation of us athletes, who were also democratically elected but unable to vote in the last elections, we are aware that this right was denied to them.

Recalling that the members of the previous Association, which never exercised functions, only used the right to vote to elect these social bodies of the Federation, even taking the opportunity for some of these elements to be part of it.

This is just one more point in which we verify that the choice of the Governing Bodies of the institution that should represent us is not at all serious and this is open to everyone’s eyes. The crux of all this is centered exactly here, it is the associations that vote, not worrying about the general displeasure of the athletes, it is impossible not to think that this game is not addicted, because every four years, with a general opinion of displeasure, this direction remains.

Thus, we understand that the votes of the District Associations do not represent the most important aspect of this modality, that we are Athletes.

As such, we appeal to associations to be concerned not only with listening to clubs but also to athletes. In moments of decision, do it with the awareness and responsibility of those who are caring for us all. Athletics is a sport with a history and deserves a different treatment. We athletes deserve different athletics, better athletics.

Remember that the Portuguese Athletics Federation is at the service of Athletes, Coaches and Clubs and not the opposite, as it has shown in recent times.

Thus, we asked you to reflect on the matter, and if you feel that you have given everything to the sport and that you are not able to change this paradigm, then you will certainly come to the conclusion that you only have one option left, to resign.

We want serious people, with ideas and willingness to work, to provide us with a better future. We want an innovative sport, with values ??and that can serve our young people, thus giving them the necessary conditions to see athletics as a way to make their dreams come true.

RELEASE

While computers have long been used to generate data for mathematicians, the task of identifying interesting patterns has relied mainly on the intuition of the mathematicians themselves. However, it?s now possible to generate more data than any mathematician can reasonably expect to study in a lifetime. Which is where machine learning comes in.

A paper, published today in Nature, describes how DeepMind was set the task of discerning patterns and connections in the fields of knot theory and representation theory. To the surprise of the mathematicians, new connections were suggested; the mathematicians were then able to examine these connections and prove the conjecture suggested by the AI. These results suggest that machine learning can complement mathematical research, guiding intuition about a problem.

Using the patterns identified by machine learning, mathematicians from the University of Oxford discovered a surprising connection between algebraic and geometric invariants of knots, establishing a completely new theorem in the field. The University of Sydney, meanwhile, used the connections made by the AI to bring them close to proving an old conjecture about Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, which has been unsolved for 40 years.

Professor Andras Juhasz, of the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford and co-author on the paper, said: ?Pure mathematicians work by formulating conjectures and proving these, resulting in theorems. But where do the conjectures come from?

?We have demonstrated that, when guided by mathematical intuition, machine learning provides a powerful framework that can uncover interesting and provable conjectures in areas where a large amount of data is available, or where the objects are too large to study with classical methods.?

Professor Marc Lackeby, of the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford and co-author, said: ?It has been fascinating to use machine learning to discover new and unexpected connections between different areas of mathematics. I believe that the work that we have done in Oxford and in Sydney in collaboration with DeepMind demonstrates that machine learning can be a genuinely useful tool in mathematical research.?

Professor Geordie Williamson, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sydney and director of the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute and co-author, said: ?AI is an extraordinary tool. This work is one of the first times it has demonstrated its usefulness for pure mathematicians, like me.

?Intuition can take us a long way, but AI can help us find connections the human mind might not always easily spot.?

The molecular messages are sent to our brain and potentially our eyes immediately after we exercise.

The ANU team is conducting research to better understand what impact these molecular messages have on retinal health, but also the central nervous system and eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Associate Professor Riccardo Natoli, Head of Clear Vision Research at ANU, says the molecules could potentially be hijacked, recoded and ?bottled up? in a pill and taken like a vitamin.

?The beneficial messages being sent to the central nervous system during exercise are packaged up in what are known as lipid particles. We are essentially prescribing the molecular message of exercise to those who physically aren?t able to,? he said.

?We think that as you age, the ability to communicate between the muscles and the retina starts to be lost. Similar to taking supplements, maybe we can provide genetic or molecular supplementation that enables that natural biological process to continue as we age.

?Our goal is to figure out what these molecules are communicating to the body and how they?re communicating.?

New ANU research has examined existing literature into the effects of exercise on the central nervous system and eyes. Specifically, the researchers set out to discover what impact exercise has on the retina ? the light-sensing part of the eye ? and whether exercise can help maintain good eyesight as we age.

Dr Joshua Chu-Tan, also from the ANU Clear Vision Research Lab, says further research is needed to understand how these molecular signals, which are sent from the rest of the body when we exercise, actually reach our brain and eyes.

He says the team?s preliminary research into the benefits of exercise on the retina has unearthed some ?promising? results.

?We know exercise is good for our eyesight, but to what extent is still unknown. Our aim is to understand the benefits of exercise at the molecular level and how it is beneficial for the central nervous system and the retina,? Dr Chu-Tan said.

?We found the benefits of exercise extend far beyond what has traditionally been known, however this has been largely understudied in the retina, despite the retina being an extension of the brain.

?One of the main goals of doing this review was to determine what?s going on inside the body after we exercise that gives us the benefits of exercise, and why physical activity is so good for our brain and eyes.?

The futuristic therapy could one day help patients suffering from neurological diseases such as Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s.

?It?s been suggested that prescribing exercise to patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s can help improve and slow down the disease progression,? Dr Chu-Tan said.

?We know that from looking at diseases like Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s if you exercise in a particular fashion you can potentially stimulate neuronal activity.

?That hasn?t really been looked at in the retina at the level we?re thinking of. We want to understand the molecular messages that underpin the benefits of exercise.?

The researchers say the supplement would be intended only for patients who have restricted movement that renders them unable to exercise at an intensity needed to reap the rewards. It is not intended for the general public.

?We can?t possibly package all the effects of exercise into a single pill, there are too many benefits that stretch throughout the entire body beyond what we could ?prescribe? and that?s not the goal,? Dr Chu-Tan said.

Dr Chu-Tan, Tuckwell Scholar Max Kirkby and Associate Professor Natoli?s systematic review of existing literature into the benefits of exercise on the central nervous system and eyes, including the retina, is published in Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.

Leaders of the House of Representatives announced that they reached an agreement that will prevent the government shutdown, which could take place this weekend, with a bill that will provide the necessary funds until February 18, legislators from both parties said on the morning of February. Thursday.

However, in the Senate, the prospect of a quick agreement is undermined by the position announced by a group of Republican lawmakers, who want to take advantage of the situation to highlight their opposition to President Joe Biden’s plans to strengthen vaccination and other mandates. controls to combat the arrival of the omicron, the new variant of covid.

Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said Thursday afternoon that he will oppose the speedy passage of the resolution. “The only thing I want to close is the application of an immoral and unconstitutional vaccine mandate,” Lee said during a speech at the Senate floor.

His colleague Roger Marshall of Kansas said he would oppose an effort to swiftly pass an interim bill to keep government open unless he gets an amendment vote to remove the mandatory vaccine mandate that Biden calls on companies. .

“It’s worth shutting down the government to save jobs in Kansas,” said Marshall, who when asked if he would oppose a vote said, “That’s where I am today.”

However, for the Republican minority leader in the Upper House, Mitch McConnell, closing the government for that reason will not give a positive result: “It will only create chaos and uncertainty. I don’t think it’s the best way.” noted in an interview with FoxNews.

For his part, President Joe Biden said he had spoken with Senate leaders and was confident that there will be no government shutdown.

“There is a plan in case someone does something totally erratic, and I don’t think that will happen,” Biden said.

The agreement will be voted on in the House of Representatives

The agreement reached in the lower house in the morning paved the way for the initiative to be voted on before the end of its sessions on Thursday.

In a statement, the chair of the Lower House Appropriations Committee, Democrat Rosa DeLauro, reported that an agreement has been reached on an ongoing resolution (CR) that would temporarily finance the government at the levels of the previous year and give them more time to discuss other matters: “It practically does not include changes to existing policy or funds, creating incentives from both sides to negotiate ?.

The highest-ranking senator on the committee, Richard Shelby, ratified that an agreement had been reached on the CR, adding that now is the time to “get serious” negotiating spending bills for fiscal year 2022. .

?I’ve said many times that work can only get started if we agree to start fiscal year 22 where we end fiscal year 21,? Shelby said. Otherwise, he explained, “we will be having the same conversation in February” (about an imminent government shutdown).

After the resolution is voted in the House of Representatives, this Thursday afternoon or night the initiative will go to the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Democrat Chuck Schumer claimed: “Let’s be clear, if there is a government shutdown, it will be a Republican shutdown, an anti-vaccine shutdown.” He added that he hoped that the “most reassured heads” could be the ones to take the lead to reach the deadline.

Both houses must pass identical bills by midnight Friday to avoid a shutdown, an outcome lawmakers have described as catastrophic at a time when the country is responding to a potentially more dangerous new variant of the coronavirus.

The new funding proposal, known as an ongoing resolution, covers federal operations through February 18, at which point lawmakers must either adopt another short-term agreement or test the 2022 budget.

Both parties agreed to allocate seven billion dollars for Afghans evacuated from their country after the withdrawal of US troops. They include 4.3 billion for the Department of Defense to serve Afghans at its bases, 1.3 billion for the State Department and 1.3 billion more for the Office for Children and Families to provide accommodations and services, such as housing and English classes.

By then, the battle for a new deal is expected to be just as difficult as each side pursues different goals. Democrats hope to meet Biden’s budget targets, putting more funding in areas like health and education. Republicans are looking to cut spending in those areas to put more money into the Pentagon.
