The third film for Phase Four brings an interesting concept to the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is about to get a lot bigger. While some people might be annoyed that Marvel is releasing so much content this year, many can agree that the studio is dedicated to maintaining its fan base.

?Eternals? is the third film from Marvel Studios to debut in 2021. Just like with the other Marvel films, I was looking forward to this movie. In particular, I was excited to see Chloe Zhao direct a Marvel movie with a star-studded cast. Since her film ?Nomadland? (2020) won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Marvel fans were excited to see how her filmmaking will impact the general audience?s perception of the MCU. The trailers looked beautiful and promised that this new story for the MCU was going to be unique, which proved to be true after watching it.

The film introduces a large group of heroes to this cinematic universe. Each character is part of an alien race named Eternals, destined throughout history to stop the Deviants, a group of human-hunting monsters, from invading Earth. The Eternal Ikaris, played by Richard Madden, is searching for his fellow Eternals in the present day after discovering that the Deviants returned. Throughout the film, viewers are introduced to the other Eternals and begin to see how they have affected the history of the MCU.

?Eternals? makes history in the MCU with the first deaf superhero, Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff. The scenes where she used her speed were very thrilling and definitely the best portrayal of a speedster in any comic book movie.

While the film was not action-packed, the character development made up for this absence. The relationship between Gilgamesh and Thena, who were played by Ma Dong-seok and Angelina Jolie, respectively, was very heartfelt and fans should be excited for their arc throughout the film.

The humor of the film was also well done. Rather than forcing jokes into every scene like in some Marvel films such as ?Avengers: Age of Ultron? (2015), ?Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? (2017), and ?Ant-Man and the Wasp? (2018), the humor was used to show the personality of the characters. In particular, the Eternal Kingo Sunen, played by Kumail Nanjiani, used his humor to exemplify his life of fame.

While ?Eternals? may be confusing at first to understand how these new characters fit into the MCU, their story leaves many doors open for the future of the franchise.

The film?s costume design was also phenomenal. The costume designer, Sammy Sheldon, did a great job and definitely deserves praise for the designs, especially with Madden?s and Kit Harrington?s characters. She was also the costume designer for other Marvel films such as ?X-Men: First Class? (2011) and ?Ant-Man? (2015).

While I found the film to have many strengths, there were some clarity issues that couldn?t be missed by the viewer. In particular, the start of the movie should have included more exposition to the Eternals rather than immediately introducing their situation in the present day. Also, similar to many Marvel movies, the villain,  Kro, played by Bill Skarsgård, was not great, and his motives were very cliche?. His plan to destroy civilization and kill the Eternals did not serve a purpose to the development of the characters and acted more as a lazy excuse for action sequences. However, the twist villain is very surprising and makes viewers wonder if more superhero films should follow this plot element.

While ?Eternals? may be confusing at first to understand how these new characters fit into the MCU, their story leaves many doors open for the future of the franchise. As usual, don?t forget to stay until after the credits. The two post-credits scenes are phenomenal and introduce some exciting new characters to the cinematic universe.

When the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh (63) published in 1993 ?Trainspotting?, his debut, he probably did not imagine that it would become a literary phenomenon elevated to the category of cult work when Danny BoyleFascinated, he decided to take it to theaters just three years later. But the truth is that Welsh created a rough, dramatic generational portrait, with humorous overtones and a kind of happy ending that, when transferred to the big screen, was an unprecedented success.

Although it is no less true that it also generated a lot of controversy for putting before the eyes of the whole world a group of young heroin addicts, unemployed, drunk and addicted to soccer, sex and rock and roll who delivered very politically incorrect messages at a time when the audience was probably not used to such a dose of reality.

In any case, Trainspotting, that this year turns 25, has become part of popular culture and so remembered is his story, like its protagonists or even its soundtrack. Among the cast of young actors who starred in the film, perhaps he stands out above all Ewan McGregor, but we must not forget either Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller o Kelly Macdonald. Y a Ewen Bremner.

Scottish actor (49) played Spud, the inseparable friend of Mark Renton (McGregor) and one of the characters that conquered the public ipso facto and starred in one of the most eschatological scenes in the history of cinema for which it is habitually questioned. In it, his character, after a night out, wakes up at the house of the girl he has spent the night with and has an embarrassing moment with his parents, as can be seen in the video.

?They still ask me what the substance of the breakfast scene was made of. It is why they ask me the most. People are fascinated with it. ‘Was it real shit?’ They ask me. And it amazes me that people believe that. We had to do that scene numerous times, and spraying three actors with actual excrement repeatedly would have been a bit excessive?, Bremner assured Radio X at the time about the mythical scene.

Obviously, his role in Trainspotting It is probably the most relevant of his entire career, at least in terms of repercussion, but if you dive a little into his filmography you will realize that in his career there are renowned films and productions such as Snatch: Pigs and Diamonds (2000), Pearl Harbor (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Match Point (2005) or more recently Wonder Woman (2017) and the continuation of Trainspotting (2017). His work on television has also been quite abundant with more or less sporadic appearances and some more renowned roles in series.

But if anyone thinks that this actor, who can be perfectly considered as a luxury secondary, has put acting aside, nothing is further from the truth. Follow to the foot of the canyon participating in projects that have received critical and public support such as Fist Cow (2019), in rarities such as Gutterbee (2019) or in blockbusters like Wonder Woman 1984 (2020). The scientists from Niigata University (Japan), Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Taiwan), and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to observe a newborn star (protostar) in the WB89-789 region, located in the extreme outer Galaxy. A variety of carbon-, oxygen-, nitrogen-, sulfur-, and silicon-bearing molecules, including complex organic molecules containing up to nine atoms, were detected. Such a protostar, as well as the associated cocoon of chemically-rich molecular gas, were for the first time detected at the edge of our Galaxy.

The ALMA observations reveal that various kinds of complex organic molecules, such as methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH), methyl formate (HCOOCH3), dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3), formamide (NH2CHO), propanenitrile (C2H5CN), etc., are present even in the primordial environment of the extreme outer Galaxy. Such complex organic molecules potentially act as the feedstock for larger prebiotic molecules.

Interestingly, the relative abundances of complex organic molecules in this newly discovered object resemble remarkably well what is found in similar objects in the inner Galaxy. The observations suggest that complex organic molecules are formed with similar efficiency even at the edge of our Galaxy, where the environment is very different from the solar neighborhood.

It is believed that the outer part of our Galaxy still harbors a primordial environment that existed in the early epoch of galaxy formation. The environmental characteristics of the extreme outer Galaxy, e.g., low abundance of heavy elements, small or no perturbation from Galactic spiral arms, are very different from those seen in the present-day solar neighborhood. Because of its unique characteristics, the extreme outer Galaxy is an excellent laboratory to study star formation and the interstellar medium in the past Galactic environment.

?With ALMA we were able to see a forming star and the surrounding molecular cocoon at the edge of our Galaxy,? says Takashi Shimonishi, an astronomer at Niigata University, Japan, and the paper?s lead author. ?To our surprise, a variety of abundant complex organic molecules exists in the primordial environment of the extreme outer Galaxy. The interstellar conditions to form the chemical complexity might have persisted since the early history of the Universe,? Shimonishi adds.

?These observations have revealed that complex organic molecules can be efficiently formed even in low-metallicity environments like the outermost regions of our Galaxy. This finding provides an important piece of the puzzle to understand how complex organic molecules are formed in the Universe,? says Kenji Furuya, an astronomer at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and the paper?s co-author.

It is not yet clear, however, if such a chemical complexity is common in the outer part of the Galaxy. Complex organic molecules are of special interest, because some of them are connected to prebiotic molecules formed in space. The team is planning to observe a larger number of star-forming regions in the future, and hopes to clarify whether chemically-rich systems, as seen in our Solar System, are ubiquitous through the history of the Universe.

Gaumont Television has convinced an L.A. judge it may have been damaged when its former CEO didn?t wipe her laptop after she was terminated ? but it can?t get a declaration that said violation means she has to return her severance payment and it can avoid paying her a share of profits from now on.

Veteran TV exec Katie O?Connell Marsh in January 2018 sued Gaumont claiming that she hadn?t been paid her share of profits from hit series including Narcos, Hannibal, Hemlock Grove and F is for Family.

The company filed a cross-complaint in June 2019, alleging that she divulged trade secrets in violation of her exit agreement, which mandated that she?d return the company?s property (along with credit cards, keys and computer equipment), not talk to the press and not disparage the company. Gaumont argues that because of these alleged breaches, it doesn?t have to pay Marsh a share of profits from the series.

After a Sept. 4 hearing, L.A. County Superior Court Judge Holly Fujie took the matter under submission and on Sept. 8 she issued a split decision on Marsh?s motion for summary judgement. Much of the discussion centers on allegedly unreturned property.

Marsh paid $600 to keep her work laptop as part of her exit negotiations and says no one from the company asked her to wipe any information or turn it over to IT so they could remove anything. But Gaumont argues that because she was physically keeping the equipment, the section of the agreement that said she must return the company?s property should have been met by deleting the information on it. During discovery, Marsh has produced confidential documents like employment agreements and financial statements, some of which contain trade secrets. When Gaumont realized that, it demanded she hand over the laptop so the company can see what?s on it and Marsh refused.

Fujie found Gaumont has shown a triable issue of fact with regard to damages by presenting evidence that Marsh didn?t comply with the termination agreement and the company has been damaged as a result. So, she denied Marsh?s motion for summary judgment on that claim.

But Gaumont?s request for a declaration that because Marsh allegedly breached the deal it doesn?t have to continue paying her a share of profits from the series and she should have to return her more than $600,000 severance and other bonuses she?s been paid was shot down.

In granting Marsh?s motion for summary adjudication with regard to that claim for declaratory relief, Fujie pointed to an Aug. 14 ruling. ?The obligations of Plaintiff and Gaumont are clearly independent based on the language of the Termination Agreement,? writes Fujie. ?Thus, Gaumont is still required to pay Plaintiff her MAGR bonus and other agreed-upon compensation pursuant to the terms of the Termination Agreement. Based on the Court?s reading of the Termination Agreement, the intention of the parties was not to base Plaintiff?s compensation thereunder on Plaintiff?s compliance with returning the Computer and the Property of Gaumont.?

Fujie found Marsh?s motion moot with respect to the other four causes of action because she?s already sustained a demurrer without leave to amend after finding them defective.

Environmental activist César Kouakou (left, here in December 2019) and planter Dominique Bi Irié tour the plots affected by the old coal factory project near the industrial area of ??San Pedro which could be replaced by a gas power station. The planter should lose all his land.

It was one of the last major coal projects in Africa. But the San Pedro plant, in the southwest of Côte d’Ivoire, may never see the light of day. This abandonment should be formalized in an expected document that must be published imminently: the Nationally Determined Contribution (CDN), this non-binding state plan listing future climate actions by 2030 and demanded from all signatory countries. of the Paris Agreement.

The information had already been made public on November 18 during parliamentary debates on the next budget. Questioned on the San Pedro project, the Minister of the Environment Jean-Luc Assi had indicated that the government was giving up the construction of this plant.

” A very good news “, for the opposition deputy Jean Gervais Tchéidé, member of the committee responsible for environmental issues at the National Assembly, who says he expects more explanations from the government: ?Now we have to talk to the people about it and make it more concrete. “

Among the defenders of the environment, some also fear a communication strategy ?post-COP26?, the international conference on the climate which was held in Glasgow at the beginning of November. During the event, Minister Jean-Luc Assi spoke of the need for a “Coal withdrawal”, without further details.

“Dangerous for populations”

?There are sentences spoken, but no clear document. The energy ministry must also publish something to reassure us “, claims Ange David Baimey, activist and expert in climate change.

Relentlessly fought for five years by climate activists, the San Pedro project should have seen the light of day in 2024. With a capacity of 700 megawatts, this thermal power station was supposed to supply electricity to the numerous industrial infrastructures of San Pedro as well as much of the Ivory Coast. It should have been built by the Chinese company PowerChina and operated by the Ivorian company S. Energies.

In Kablaké 1 and Kablaké 2 (here, in December 2019), the Ivorian company S. Energies, which was to operate the coal plant, gave school kits and water pumps to residents as part of its project called Broto IPP .

This subsidiary of the Ivorian holding company Snedai ensured that the plant would be “Modern and green”, to the chagrin of environmentalists denouncing a project “From another time” and “Dangerous for populations”. In early 2020, the Minister Mayor of San Pedro, Félix Anoblé, told the World Africa do not want “Block development under the pretext and fear of total protection of the environment”. Its promoters praised a project that was inexpensive for the taxpayer and rich in jobs.

Today, the tone has changed a lot within the authorities. “Coal is no longer part of the energy mix, underlines Gustave Aboua Aboua, Director General of Sustainable Development in the Ministry of the Environment and member of the Ivorian delegation in Glasgow. There was pressure, strong opposition from the energy ministry, but we fought and they understood. “

Solar, wind, geothermal, biomass

To explain this turnaround, the official argues that Côte d’Ivoire does not have the raw material: the charcoal had to be imported from Colombia and South Africa, which represented a significant ecological cost.

“In addition, we do not know how to treat the waste that will impact the area around San Pedro, it is not at all profitable to go down this path., continues the general manager. We prefer to focus on renewable energies: solar, wind, geothermal, biomass. “ The minister announced that he wanted to achieve “45% of the energy mix” thanks to green energies.

In Glasgow, he also indicated that Côte d’Ivoire now set itself a goal of reducing greenhouse gases by just over 30% by 2030, and not just 28% as announced more early, notably through the removal of black fuel.

Within the ministry, it is assured that the abandonment of coal was decreed before the discovery of vast reserves of oil and natural gas off the Ivorian coast, announced in early September. “Would the commitment to pull out of coal have been made without this oil field?”, asks political scientist Sylvain N’Guessan. With these discoveries, it is easier to move towards energy autonomy. By withdrawing from coal, Côte d’Ivoire is improving its international image and killing two birds with one stone. “

For a gas plant

In addition, despite the repeated desire to develop renewable energies, the decision was taken to replace the coal-fired power station with a gas-fired power station, on the same model as that of the Azito industrial zone in Yopougon.

“It’s almost the same project, indicates a Snedai executive on condition of anonymity, although this latest information has not yet been made public. There will be a power station in the same location, except that it is a combined cycle gas power station. With everything that is happening at the global level, the pressure of COP26, we are moving towards another fuel. The main thing is that we can produce energy while limiting the impact on the environment. “ A power station much less expensive than the previous one, the gas being produced in Côte d’Ivoire.

This new infrastructure could see the light of day in “2025 or 2026”, considers the executive. Before COP26, China had already committed to no longer finance coal projects abroad. The Ivorian State and PowerChina, the Chinese company which was to spend more than one billion euros for the San Pedro plant, “No longer have a firm commitment together”, confirms the head of Snedai, indicating that the group is looking for new partners.

“If the state decides to build a gas plant, it is not good news, over Ange David Baimey. It remains a major source of pollution. “ The fight for environmentalists is not over.

“I am 9 years old in this photo, surely taken by my father, on the set of Exploits of a young Don Juan, by Gianfranco Mingozzi, taken from the novel by Apollinaire. At the time, I had already shot a few commercials and TV movies, but there I got my very first cinema film – my dream! On TV or in theaters, where my father took me a lot, I blocked on the actors and actresses, Dustin Hoffman, Isabelle Adjani, Catherine Deneuve? And of course the heroines of The Boom, The Murderous Summer, The Public Woman, The Year of the Jellyfish? The films of those years in which young girls had a central place and which helped me to project myself.

?I don’t think much about the shoots of my youth. It’s when I play with children that flashes come back to me. “

This filming took place in the summer between CM1 and CM2, in a castle in Yvelines. I played the hero’s little sister, a naughty girl with a terrible first name: Berthe. I said to myself: “What a lack of pot to be called Berthe for a leading role!” I was the only child among adults, which I didn’t mind – I was already taking the metro on my own to get to the castings. Above all, that’s where I felt the pleasure of being on a film set. For TV, I was used to the SFP studios, whereas, there, everything seemed to me a discovery: the projectors, the cables, as we see in this photo, the movements of the camera, the sets, the gestures of the technicians, the concentration of actors to whom I was responding, Marina Vlady, François Perrot, Claudine Auger, whom I had seen in a James Bond …

The Taste of M

As I was forbidden to attend the filming of love scenes, I wandered alone in the castle, like a little spy. The rest of the year, I had my life as a schoolgirl in Aubervilliers, I went to the markets where my parents were traders. But, on this set, I suddenly had the impression of being at the heart of the cinema factory. Until I was 17, I took this filming activity as an infiltrator, without believing that it would become a profession. The seesaw was Cold water, by Olivier Assayas, where I understood that being an actress was not, as I naively thought, the hairstyle, the makeup, the costume, the well-said text, the character, but that it meant interpreting.

I don’t think much about the shoots of my youth. It’s when I play with children that flashes come back to me. In Nona and her daughters, In fact, Valérie Donzelli stuck me five to embody my sons, including hers, Gustave! Since the days of photography, the pleasure of being on the set has not diminished. To see this collective that makes together, these people dedicated to the same activity, these bodies, these energies in the same direction, in the early morning or at – 20 ° C, as if our lives depended on it? It amazes me with the same intensity that the little girl is spying on here in her period costume. “

RADIO – Dua Lipa with “Love Again” adds a fourth overall victory on the radio. Adele with “Easy On Me” stepped on her heels this time, but so far the British diva had to settle for three places and the current silver. The single from the singer’s new album “30” has only been in the series for six rounds and we will probably hear a lot about it in the coming weeks. Ed Sheeran, whose hit “Bad Habits” once again defended the bronze position, settled very well on the medal stages. In the top three, the 30-year-old musician has been holding on for sixteen rounds, standing at the top eleven times. Lost Frequencies and Calum Scott improved on the four in the joint song “Where Are You Now”, which jumped seven positions. Irish singer Dermot Kennedy has made an even more significant shift – he was “nineteenth with” Better Day “last time, now he is five. “My Dear” takes over the position of the most played domestic song from Marek Ztracený. Although it lost from four to six, the hit “Another Night” from the band Jelen dropped even more – it falls from two to seven. Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers” premiered in the top ten, another taste of the October album “=”. How long will it take for our readable playwrights to catapult her to the forefront? So far, he’s taking eight. The most successful novelty was provided by Bastille, who wish us “No Bad Days” from the 55th line. Scottish singer Tom Walker and Greek-Australian rapper Masked Wolf follow number sixty-two with “Something Beautiful”, and seventy-one have earned OneRepublic thanks to “Sunshine”. Avril Lavigne is recalled from 74th place with the current single “Bite Me”. The last fresh piece was taken care of by Xindl X, who sent the single “Pearl Hunter” from his new album “Therapy” to the 96th place.

ALBA – Viktor Sheen is a real phenomenon of the Czech scene. After the huge commercial success of the previous series “Black and White World” (2019) and “Colors” (2020), a rapper of Kazakh origin has now come unannounced with the novelty “Stories and Dreams”. He immediately broke down the album charts with her, and both of his mentioned older bestsellers still remain in the top ten. To make matters worse, with individual songs from the current album, Sheen took the top fifteen places in the digital singles chart. Adele herself, the biggest global pop star of today, stood against the 28-year-old performer. While her fourth studio film “30” in the world exceeds the sales highs of this year, she has to settle for second place in our country. But not all days are over, the coming weeks in the sign of finding gifts under the tree could help her to number one. The singer’s fans will probably appreciate the physical medium more than Sheen’s younger listeners, who are known to make extensive use of streaming services. Abba moved to the bronze podium with “Voyage” after two championships, the potato Mirai with “Maneki Neko” also lost the two positions, Ed Sheeran closes the top five with “=”. In addition to the tandem, another novelty fit into the top two in the top ten. Sting, who celebrated his 70th birthday in October, is to blame. The British musician has prepared his fifteenth studio studio “The Bridge”, which is supposed to unite the frustrated society. At our music server, we awarded her the title Album of the Week, and the listeners sent her to seventh place in the ranking.

Viktor Sheen - Stories and dreams

The 21st place is marked by a proven collaboration – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss follow the title “Raise The Roof” on the fourteen-year-old record “Raising Sand”, for which they won six Grammys. Helena Vondrá?ková took the thirty-ninth position with the re-edition of the album “Helena Vondrá?ková Island” from 1970. Roman Holý contributed his first solo album, the father of Czech funk starts with the title “Strá?ce klid, Vol. 1” as the eighty-third. “Narrator of Songs”, ie Wabi Dan?k with a three-point selection, anchored five places lower.

The year is 1998, I was studying at college and studying hard to not lose the scholarship, there were parties, college is always a wonderfully busy time, and then one day, someone from the crowd suggested we go see a friend play and we went, with no great pretensions for the night, we arrived at what my memory can remember, a place not fancy with a stage not very big. I just know the band joined and we could only comment “What happened here?” at the end of the night, because it went dancing from the first song to the last and the last “Thank you!” of the big band. I had to ask the people I was with about that night, to be sure of my memories and the answers were all “my god what night was that” or “unforgettable” or “one of the best nights of my life”.

It was exactly this feeling of pleasure that came to me when I was called to interview the Funk As You Like, to whom I refer in the story above. More than 20 years later, the band formed by Maestro Tiquinho (Trombone and arrangements), Reginaldo 16 Toneladas (Trumpet), Hugo Hori (Sax and Flute), Kito Siqueira (Baritone sax), Paulo de Viveiro (Trumpet), Kuki Stolarski ( Drums), Renato Galozzi (Guitar), Eron Guarnieri (Keyboards), Sérgio Bártolo (Bass) and Gustavo Ceki (Percussion), became famous because she absolutely deserved it, recorded with big names like Elza Soares, Paulo Moura, Sandra de Sá , Oswaldinho do Acordeon, João Donato, Thaíde, so on, only the heavyweights of Brazilian music, and the party continues, on Saturday, 04.12, they make two presentations at the Blue Note SP, to celebrate the return to the stage after the pandemic and this long and beautiful road.

Adriana Arakake: How did you meet and how did you come up with the idea of ??setting up Funk Como Le Gusta?

FCLG: FLCG is, in principle, a group of friends. all members of the original formation already knew each other and participated or participated together in other works. Back in 1997, some of these members decided to get together for some ?jams? that started in a home studio and then migrated to some bars. But, at that moment in question, the night in São Paulo was a bit still, the houses and stages were small, there was not much new happening, so we thought about having our own party. Someone discovered a music school called Annex Domus in Pinheiros, which had a space at the back, with a stage and a small hall without any structure, but we decided to face it. With the help of other friends in sound, light, projections, reception, etc. On the first night, 450 people showed up and the success was repeated and increasing, hence the band.

AA: That’s exactly the place I remember. What were the most memorable presentations for you?

FCLG: We are a band that has always valued live performance a lot. For us, the audience is part of the show and we’ve always had this interaction, in almost all the shows we’ve done and there have been many throughout our career. So that makes our performances unforgettable. Of course, some are more important, such as album release shows, big stage shows, or with very special guests. But it’s hard to even name just a few.

AA: What is FCLG’s recipe for making every show a party?

FCLG: We’ve always valued essentially dancing shows and we try to lead the audience into this relaxed ballroom atmosphere.

AA: You guys are constantly renewing, what changes have been the most significant since the first record?

FCLG: I think that all of us, individually, change attitudes over time and this reflects in our music production. And each album of ours shows exactly the moment the group is experiencing, due to the dynamics of each member.

AA: Of the 4 albums released, do you have any favorites?

FCLG: All are children, right (laughs). You don’t have a favorite. But our audience, due to the response we had and have in terms of sales, streaming, etc., consumes more of our first album, ?Roda de Funk?.

AA What are the biggest influences of FCLG?

FCLG: Being a big band, there are 10 people, each one brings their personal contribution in the compositions and interpretations. But, the first inspiration of the group as a whole comes from great bands and musicians from the Brazilian and American seventies Black Music and also from Latin music.

AA: Do you have different trajectories as well as work with other artists, do you think together about albums and shows? How does this chemistry work so well, for so long?

FCLG: We always debate all our decisions as a group. The songs, whether for concerts or records, are decidedly raised and polished in rehearsals. The overall work is divided among the members. Over these more than 20 years, we have all discovered how we can contribute to the whole. Each one doing their best, in their best extra stage skill.

AA How did they adapt to continue producing during the most closed period of the pandemic?

FCLG: We haven’t really adapted, we’re literally in a kind of production vacuum. We continued talking, taking care of the company, planning the future, we even made a new composition in the quarantine mold, each one in his own home. But, we don’t get into the pile of incessantly producing content, or making lives. We just maintained the confidence that this terrible period was going to pass and we waited to safely resume our activities.

AA: What can audiences expect from these Blue Note shows? Is this your first post pandemic presentation?

FCLG: This show will definitely be very special. We’ve never had such a long period of time away from the stage. And it will be special also because our last show before the isolation, imposed by the pandemic was exactly at the Blue Note. It couldn’t be better for us if the first one in the retake was in the same place. We come back?

Yes! They are back! Saturday will be the day of Baile Soul, the mix of soul, funk, samba, always vibrant Latin music, the 4 albums released, the surprise guest appearances, everything will be there. I had the honor of watching and talking to several musicians, bands that made their first post-isolation presentations and it was a thrill, with FCLG it will certainly be no different and I’ll take this opportunity to celebrate my more than 20 years dancing at the party that is Funk Como Le Gusta, relive everything I felt in their first concerts in the Domus Annex. My affective memory thanks you. I can’t wait.

?In the U.S., there?s an emphasis on the value of positive emotions ? such as happiness or pride,? says Amy Halberstadt, co-author of a paper describing both studies and a professor of psychology at North Carolina State University.

?In Russia, there?s more nuance,? says Yulia Chentsova-Dutton, corresponding author of the paper and an associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University. ?Russian culture seems to value all emotions ? including negative emotions ? and it is important to learn from these emotions.

?Because the stories we read and hear as children often inform which emotions we value, we wanted to see how those stories might differ across these two cultures.?

To that end, the researchers conducted two studies. In the first study, the researchers recruited 322 parents who had children under the age of 10. The parents belonged to three groups: 72 parents were born in the U.S. and lived there; 72 parents were born in Russia, but lived in the U.S.; and 178 parents were born in Russia and lived there.

In this study, the researchers asked parents to describe the extent to which the books they read to their children depicted 10 different emotions ? six positive ones and four negative ones.

?There were no differences across groups when it came to the frequency of positive emotions ? everybody likes a book with some positivity,? says Anita Adams, a graduate student at the University of Kentucky who worked on the project as an undergraduate at NC State. ?However, Russian parents chose to read books with more negative emotions than U.S. parents. Russian-American parents were somewhere in between those two groups.?

And, when the researchers looked at parents? beliefs about the value of sadness, they found that Russian parents valued the experience of sadness more than U.S. parents.

?That value seemed to be part of why they were willing to engage more with their children about negative emotions in general,? Halberstadt says.

The second study evaluated the 40 best-selling fiction books aimed at preschool-age children in the U.S. and Russia. The researchers analyzed the text and illustrations of all 80 books to assess the range and frequency of positive and negative emotions.

This study found that a wider range of emotions are represented in the children?s books that are popular in Russia, as compared to children?s books popular in the U.S. Specifically, the text of Russian books referenced anger and sadness more often than the U.S. books; and illustrations in Russian books depicted happiness, anger and fear more frequently than the U.S. books. The researchers found this even when they accounted for differences in the length of texts and the number of illustrations featuring facial expressions.

?Taken together, these studies highlight how Russian parents engage with their children about emotions differently than U.S. parents,? Halberstadt says. ?Simply put, the study suggests Russian parents are more likely to support opportunities to engage with their young children about challenging emotions, such as anger and sadness.

?Future studies may want to explore what this might mean in terms of providing children more tools with which to navigate difficult emotions.?
